Hi all,

I bought a 2004 Golf 2.0 TDI (BKD) a few days ago and im planning to do a full service, after referring to the manual I know that I'm after 505 01 oil but after doing some looking at local auto shops I was unable to find any. After doing some research I found that 507 00 oil is the successor to 505 01.

So I was originally going to get some Castrol Edge LL 5W30 (507 00) but after more research (on this forum) I found that most people recommended 5W40 oil for the PD engines and got climates. But I am yet to find 507 00 in 5W40 where I live (Australia).

So long story short hopping to get some oil recommendations for my TDI that I will be able to find locally in auto stores like (Repco, Autobahn, Supercheap etc).

Edit: I have found Castrol Edge 5W40 oil but the ratting in 505 00 so I assume I cant use this oil? Has anyone used Liqui Moly Top Tec 4100 5w40 becuase I can get it locally.

The liqui-moly top tech 4100 is exactly what you need. That's what I run in my PD engines. That is a 505.01 spec oil. The 507 oil is for the newer common rail engines, it's a different specification.

Is 507 00 oil really as bad as they say for PD engines? Becuase Liqui Moly recommends top tec 4200 which is 5W30 and 507 00 for engines requried to use 505 01. Then again I have heard that thicker oil is better for high milege cars, mine currently has 205K Km.

I don't know, but I do know that the PD engines are picky about their oil, mainly due to camshaft design, and so I use what is specified by the manufacturer.
I also use the cera-kote additive which is supposed to help lubricity.

I wouldn't use any 5w30 in a PD tdi- especially someplace hot like Australia. Even a 507 spec 5w30, which are generally quite good.
