It's been a while since i posted these locations. I've noticed no comments in this thread. As opposed to the Sunoco thread. At the time, Shell was a few more cents (almost 10 cents per litre), than the Sunoco Gold. I haven't done any price comparisons since.

Just thought i'd mention what i heard recently:

I spoke to a senior diesel specialist this past while. He stated that the best fuel out there was Shell V Power for the TDI.

Any comments on this fuel?

Hi, that's pretty good. I'm curious about the lubricity difference between the 2 different fueling stations. Time to start searching. I'm hoping a member on the club had the same curiosity and posted data and stuff.

I tend to either use Sunoco Gold or Esso as those are the most convenient for me. I try to stay away from Esso, as I get 50km+ or more on Sunoco Gold.

The few times I filled up with Shell I noticed no difference between it and Sunoco Gold.

I'm not discrediting the information on the fuels. Maybe I have had some bad luck with bad stations with poor fuel. I filled up 2 tanks ago with gold in alliston, and I had terrible power, and terrible mileage. I went back to Shell, and the power and mileage was back. I can't explain it.

Shell tends to be more expensive and slow to respond to changing gas prices... sunoco is quicker and on the ball with regards to prices...

The sunoco location on winston churchill and 403 is awesome... i find they are cheaper there for gas than EVERY single station around by a few cents :p

This speaks for itself, i always feel that my car is more sluggish after using anything but sunoco gold and i use it religously, but sometimes, you just have to stop and get whats available if your out in the boondocks

Fill up there all the time myself because it's 10 minutes from my house.

Have been using Sunoco Gold for over a year now with very few exceptions.
I made the mistake last weekend of filling up with Pioneer (Esso) and got 100 less Kms on my trip to Ottawa and back.

And yes there is a slight power difference I noticed comparing Sunoco to Esso.

My best tank was on Petro Can.

Last time I filled up with shell was in the states and had pretty much the same mileage

My PD like the Sunoco Gold, I get a least 100km+ more per tank with it then anything else. just my 2 cents.

I generally fill up with Gold in Alliston, although I've used Shell Regular diesel a few times and not noticed any difference. Pioneer diesel (Esso flavour I think) produces a quite rough cold idle, so I only fill up there (Hanover) if I'm too close to empty to make it to Alliston.

It seems that you guys like your Shell V-Power Diesel very much despite it's lower cetane rating @ 42 is well below Sunoco Gold Diesel @ 46-yes that 4 cetane points. Even the PC & Sunoco ULSD Diesel cetane rating @ 44 are higher than the SVPD. Is SVPD that much better Diesel fuel from it's lower cetane rating than the other Diesel fuel with much higher cetane rating?

I believe i've read that it is a cetane level of 40.

I'm not entirely sure i believe the cetane ratings posted. I think the data is outdated and was taken before the ULSD days. I could be entirely incorrect......

Winston Churchill and Argentia...I've filled them up a few times.
Now, a careful study of marketing and distribution is needed to understand to fuel quality. Shell, or any of the refiners can publish whatever they like whenever they like about their cetane ratings. The samples for those tests probably were taken right at a refinery with freshly refined fuel and additive.
In reality, though, there are only 3 pipelines feeding the Toronto area terminals with shared pipeline time...and in fact shared product with one exception. So, when you fuel at Shell, you could be getting PC fuel, or Esso fuel or Sunoco fuel. The only difference with V-power is an additive, that coincidently comes from the same producer as Sunoco's Gold additive. This is NOT to suggest the additive is the same, but merely from the same producer. The same situation applies the Esso and PC...they all share the same fuels. A tender comes down the pipe and certain amounts are allocated to each terminal. Sunoco, on the other hand tends to be very proprietary about it's diesel fuel. About 98% of Sunoco diesel fuel is Sunoco refined fuel. Only very occasionally, when another refiner has had supply disruption and has had to tap into reserves arrangements has Sunoco accepted pipeline supply from another refiner. And at least once that I know of, has that tender been refused, due to product being off spec. (understanding the consequences of a pipeline refusal... a few hundred kilometers of 16 inch pipe full of fuel propelled by turbine and no place to go)
From Shell, in Toronto, PC is loaded, Shell is loaded, Beaver is loaded, some Olco and occasion, Ultramar. From Esso in Toronto, Esso of course, some Pioneer, Husky, occasionally Ultramar. From Sunoco in Toronto, Pioneer is loaded, Ultramar is loaded, some Olco, UPI/Growmark/Co-op is loaded...just as a sampling. (these are the principles)

Thanks for the info OhMagoo. Based on your knowledge and testing. What fuel would you recommend is the best..cetane...lubricity...wise?

Sorry, I can't help you much in that department...I don't pay that much attention to that kind of detail. My truck consumes about 3000 litres a week of fuel...which I track by the 12 hour increments. With this tracking, I find out rather quickly if my fuel economy is tanking, and can adjust quickly if need be. If fueling at our yard...the Sunoco card lock on Doney Cres., I use only Sunoco Gold. If fueling elsewhere, I use Sunoco regular LSD. This is based only on a price consideration. In my car, I use whatever is handy, since my commute is now only about 1/3 of a kilometer. (many days I use the quad, Polaris Predator 500). The other cars, a Passat TDI and a Golf TDI, usually use Sunoco Gold, but not limited to Gold only because they don't see many miles anymore.

Just out of curiosity, does your truck have 1 primary injection pump and 5 secondary ones. According the the litres you consume per week. Have you noticed any issues/failures/problems with any of your IP's.

I recently found out when i was stuck in Brantford, that the big rigs are running some serious equipment.

I was filling up at the PetroCan on Trafalgar and Upper Middle, but found that I wasn't getting great mileage at all. Switching to the ESSO down the road definitely showed some good improvement. The Sunoco at 403 and Winston Churchill - that's the one on the South side with the Timmy's and Wendy's? I might have to give that a shot!

The truck...an '09 Kenworth T800, sitting on a 230 inch wheel base. 4:11 rear end ratio in 46,000 lb axles with a 16,000 lbs front axle. Geared with an Eaton/Fuller 13 speed powered by a 485 hp 1850 ft lbs torque Cummins 15 litre engine. Single high pressure high volume fuel pump feeding 6 pump injectors (same idea as the TDI PD engine) manufactured by Stanadyne.

Issues...I have serious issues with this truck. There are 3 but they are major. Cummins is having some challenging issues meeting the new emissions requirements. The 2 items most prone to fail, in order, are the Holset variable geometry turbo chargers and the EGR coolers. 3rd on the list are a spattering of sensors, and apparently there are around 70 of them on this engine. As for problems with the injectors...I've had none so far on this truck, but I'm in the middle of sorting through the problems with Kenworth and Cummins, so there maybe an injector issue. We don't know yet. I have a "high inlet pressure" code showing up on the turbo, and the turbo was just replaced on Friday. (along with the EGR cooler) ((though this truck is better than my '08...it had it's first new turbo at 150,000 klics and by 210,000 klics had 3 more...this one I got 220,000 klics out of the first turbo)) By the way, the truck is only 9 months old.

Minimum Diesel fuel cetane rating is 40 mandated by CGSB.

Here's the e-mail quote I got from Shell Canada....." Shell Canada diesels meet and exceed the CGSB (Canadian General Standards Board) specifications of a minuimum of 40 cetane, for this country.....".

Now if you think the data is oudated and was taken before ULSD days, please help yourself and contact Shell, Sunoco, Petro Canada and other fuel suppliers to provide you information wrt Diesel fuel cetane rating in ON? I have e-mails from those three fuel suppliers dated 8/09 wrt Diesel fuel cetane rating in ON. Do you want me to post them and see how old the info is and who's right on this matter?

In my opinion, that's MY opinion, how much of a difference do you think it makes to use one fuel supplier over another. A diesel is/was designed to run on dirt cheap vegetable oil in its original design.

Some of you claim to get another so many km per tank more using this or that fuel. Now there are many more people driving a 5 speed handshake than automatics, so it is difficult to make mileage comparisons for me. But in mixed driving I can get 800km from about 50+ litres. I use the least expensive Diesel I can get and it is probably as much as 10 cents cheaper per litre than the Major brands Gold or V-Power or whatever it may be called. Translate the monetary difference of a complete fill-up, who is going to be further ahead? 55 litres x 10 cents = $ 5.50. So if you get an extra, as an example 100 km a tank, it still costs you $ 3.00+ more to fill up compared to my cost, in other words it COSTS you $ 3.00+ for an extra 100km.

My .02 worth.
