No air filter on EGR intake?

I just bought a 2001 Jetta TDI and I noticed that there is no air filter for the fresh air inlet on the EGR valve. It looks to me that fresh air comes through the intercooler radiator and staight into the EGR valve and into the engine with no air filter or a place to put an air filter. So it looks to me like dirty air is being sucked straight into the engine.

Has anyone noticed this?

What the heck are you talking about?

First there is no fresh air inlet on the EGR.

Second, all air into the engine is drawn in through the air filter box on the drivers side.

Well, I correct that to read the only fresh air is what comes FROM the air box in through the black elbow hose.

Just speaking hypothetically, could engineers design a filter to trap soot before it reaches the intake manifold? It would be nice to change a filter every xx,000 miles instead of cleaning the intake manifold.

I stand corrected

I thought the air came straight through the intercooler radiator. I see now that the air flows from the air filter to the intercooler radiator and back through the EGR Valve.

Pardon my ignorance on the EGR.
Is the EGR allowing soot or oil in the intake manifold? Could a filter be designed to help remove oil or soot before it clogs the intake?

No filter can be made except for actually blocking off the system completely. Oil comes from the CCV system and past the turbo sealsthrough the intercooler and to the intake. Oil alone is not the issue. Soot mixed with the oil is the issue. The soot enters in the system from the flex pipe on the bottom of the EGR.

Jason,
To be 100% correct that isn't the turbo but the air compressor. The turbo is the part that is operated by the exhaust.

That said, is there anyway of reducing the restrictions on that system? It looks very messy adn "stuffed" in there.

True, but why confuse people?! ;)

You can get an old man intake and a FMIC to open up the system a lot.
