V6 Passat - strong odor outside car, ideas?

A buddy at work has this '00 Passat V6 and after any driving the car stinks almost like burnt rubber, but not burnt rubber. If the windows are down and you back up (after driving for a bit) you get hammered with the stink.

What could this be? Cat. converter? Thanks!

could be bad gas...vw gassers ask for better octane than the reg 87 stuff...also have him try some diff stations...might help...

It`s a gasser, of course that`s why it stinks......
