No front tow hook?

I was surprised this weekend when I had occasion (read necessity) to use the front tow hook- there wasn't one.

My mk4 golf had a one- screw it in after removing front grill insert. I read the manual, had a good look around. No tow hook and no tow hook threaded hole!

I'm staring at the front tow hook on a 2002 B5.5. Passenger side, behind the lower grill, round bar bent into a loop and welded to the bumper mounting plate (just above the junction of two freon lines to the condensor).

PS, I have the bumper skin off if a picture or two will help.

I will look again. I did see that. I reached in and it didn't feel solid. Someone else gave their opinion and we agreed no go. Perhaps I felt a squishy freon line.

The manual didn't say anything but I will look again.

does the pass side lower grill come right out with the fog light in there?

On the face lift Passats, the grills just snap on over the fog lamps.
