Default 2006 Jetta TDI heater problem

Used 2006 Jetta TDI purchased in July 2010 with 46K miles. Air conditioner and heater worked fine for 19 months in VT. In Feb 12, we drove car to S. Carolina and stayed for one month during which time we occasionally used the air conditioner. On return drive north, as temps dipped from 70s into 40s, we needed to use heater and it malfunctioned; the only way we could get heat was to turn dial to 80 degrees. We would run it for 20 minutes, feel over-heated, then turn it off until we felt chilled again. Repeated cycle most of the last day of driving through PA & NY to VT. Heater was not dependable in VT through March but when we took it to various VW services, conditions could not be duplicated. At end of March, we had local VW service order a new electronic heater control head unit and replace the old one. It did not solve the problem. We were told that perhaps the sensors in the dash had to be replaced, which would be an expensive proposition because of the amount of labor involved. We have not had this work done as yet. Has anyone had a similar problem with a 2006 Jetta TDI or on a 2007 gas model (we were told the heater is the same on both)? Can anyone confirm that sensors are the source of the problem? Does anyone know how many hours of labor it should take to get at them? Any other ideas about the cause?

Has anyone looked at the mixing door or motor for the mixing door?

No. Can you explain more to this newbie why that might be the cause of my heater problem?

Sorry for delay in getting back to the thread.

Your first post states " We were told that perhaps the sensors in the dash had to be replaced ". I don't like to spend big dollars on perhaps .

I think VAGCOM can look at the sensors to see if they are working. I will try to check on my car tomorrow.

Sensors and door motor can be seen with VAGCOM.
