Diesel prototypes head 24 Hours of Le Mans entry list
No fewer than nine diesel-powered prototypes will be on the grid for this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.
Peugeot has followed Audi’s lead by boosting its lineup with the addition of a privately entered LMP1-class turbodiesel. Le Mans legend Henri Pescarolo’s eponymous team will field a solo 908 HDi in the race on June 13-14, alongside one of his existing self-built, Judd-powered prototypes.
The addition of the Pescarolo entry means that Peugeot will have four 908s at Le Mans. That compares with Audi’s five-strong lineup, made up of three new R15s run by the factory Joest Racing team and two of last year’s R10s fielded on a privateer basis by the German-based Kolles operation.
The nine turbodiesels will compete against 12 gasoline-powered cars in LMP1 on the Le Mans entry list published Thursday. Aston Martin and Prodrive have been granted three factory entries for their latest Lola-built coupes, while a fourth Lola-Aston--one of the cars that Prodrive ran last year--also gained a place. It will be entered by the Anglo-Swiss Speedy Sebah team.
Le Mans perennials Creation Autosportif and ORECA have one and two LMP1 entries, respectively. Spanish race-car constructor Epsilon Euskadi will run one of its heavily revised LMP1 coupes, while two Ginetta-Zyteks have been granted places.
Three Porsche RS Spyders head the LMP2 entry. Vitaphone Racing, reigning FIA GT champions with Maserati, join the already announced Team Goh and Team Essex entries.
The two-car GT1 lineup from Corvette Racing is joined by six other cars. The privateer Luc Alphand team will bring its own pair of Corvette C6.Rs, while the Gigawave and Jetalliance teams--both regulars in FIA GT last year--make their respective Le Mans debuts with Aston Martin DBR9s.
Le Mans granted GT2 cars 14 places on the 55-place entry list. Only three Porsche 911 GT3-RSRs--one entered by American Le Mans Series champion team Flying Lizard Motorsports--will go up against nine Ferrari F430 GTs.
Ten reserves were nominated, including one LMP1 car and three LMP2s.
