05 tdi shifter cable

I'm replacing my shifter assembly because it locked up and won't go into drive. I have a used shifter assembly and cable form eBay and reinstalling. The problem is I can't get the shifter cable ball and socket back together on the transmission end of the cable. There is literally no room to get to the shifter ball! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Make room. Take the air box and battery box out of the way.

I might be stating the obvious but you have to open the hood, as well.
