I have been using it for the last few months, and got 55 mpg going to TDIfest in Wisconsin. I do remember opening my trunk for you to look while we were in the hotel parking lot.

I do remember this thread, the real thrust of this is why VW and the dealerships are so slow to update their information to the use of the 506.01 and 507.01,this is my frustration with owning a VW.

True. However, I will continue driving until reaching the designated stop.
We would be gapped by two toll plazas at Belvidere under the current setup and another six by the time we reach northwest Indiana. However, the stop in northwestern IN is before the first toll plaza we would hit in Indiana, and I generally did not have to wait more than maybe 30 seconds at either of the two westernmost toll plazas in Pennsylvania (pay $1.50 immediately on entering PA, enter ticket system just east of I-79). For exiting the Pennsylvania Turnpike, it won't matter for the competition, since it will end at a service area.
Perhaps we should put this in a new thread....
I read a couple days ago that the Pennsylvania Turnpike reconfigured that westernmost toll plaza to a $3.00 toll, collected eastbound only. In addition, the Indiana toll is proposed to increase significantly, so the portion of that road that we use will likely run about $7.

So, here's an estimate of the eastbound tolls, based on that guesstimate and payment using cash:
Illinois: $6.60
Indiana: $7.00
Ohio: $8.95
Pennsylvania: $20.00
Total eastbound: $42.55

The Pennsylvania portion is 326 miles. Assuming 40 mpg, the toll eastbound is more than the fuel if the fuel price is less than $2.45 a gallon.

Hey, guys. First post! Figured I'd say hi to the local crowd.

Don't own my TDI yet, but like my signature says, I'm working on getting a
new 2006 Jetta TDI from Luther Westside VW. I live in Edina, work in
Fridley, and go to college in Bloomington... so yeah, the fuel economy will be much appreciated.

Speaking of working in Fridley, CADtechTDi might be a coworker of mine; we do CAD/CAM at my company. I'll have to sweep the parking garage looking for TDI's =)

Well anyway, that's it for my introduction. Now I have to go browse the forum more to get a better understanding of everything that's talked about here.

Was wondering who owned a blue golf (also had a trailer hitch) that raced me on Lexington this morning??? Did not know that we were racing, I don't think it would have mattered.....you would have smoked me anyway:eek: Is that golf chipped?? I'm putting in the Evry Mod this spring so we will have to have a rematch:D

Timing belt tools

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anybody has the tools to replace the timing belt? I can do it myself buy don't think I want to spend the $300+ on the various VW specific tools I need to do the job. I just did my 70k change and will probably do it relatively soon as I commute from Elk River to St Cloud every day (7d/wk).

Also, KomarekTDI, you should check the spelling of your employer. How is it working at the new plant? NVH Engineer? Where'd you go to school? later

Actually, you may want to check with Deafbug; he is in Maple Grove.

Geez, way to typo the company I work for. All fixed now. The new facility in Wyoming, MN is all product development and testing so its not a plant but it's a great place to work.

Yes, I've been an audio geek since I was 12 so it was only fitting to choose NVH as a career path since I love cars, machines, and acoustics. I went to Michigan Tech for both my B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

ANYONE WHO NEEDS WHEEL BEARING TOOLS - I recently had to replace one of my front wheel bearings and didn't want to shell out the $369 for the wheel bearing tools so I made my own on the lathe. They performed flawlessly so if anyone would like to borrow these let me know.

It's a piece of cake if you have them balanced by Greg at www.lubricationspecialist.com - if you have to swap the nozzles yourself it is a little more involved but it really is pretty easy. Kerma has some nice instructions on his website that show illustrations of the procedure.

Greg (I'm assuming he is still doing this) will put your new nozzles on a set of injector bodies of similar age/mileage to your own, balance them, and then ship them to you. All you need to do is remove your old injectors, install the new ones, and ship the injector bodies back to Greg. He will then remove your old nozzles and ship them back to you.

BTW - this is for the ALH engine, I'm not sure about the PD nozzle swap procedure.

Sorry about the newbie question but I'm having a hard time getting productive searches of the forums. Lets say I am trying to search for the TDI license plate frames. I searched three times producing 456 results (threads) each time: 1) "license plate frame" 2) "license + plate + frame" 3) "license AND plate AND frame"

Is there any way to get the search tool to search for a phrase rather than returning all these threads?

So to answer my original query: Does anyone know if the new license plate frames are available?

Also, I was wondering if any body else's 02J shifts hard when its cold? Does the stock VW transmission fluid have a high viscosity? or do I need to adjust my shift cables? (I don't think so on the latter as it shifts fine when it is up to temp) Are there other oils that I should be dropping in? I've read a couple times where people had praised the Redline oil, but I've also heard some praise for the Amsoil.

Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Nick

I swapped nozzles on my 00' myself. I'm a very little experience working on cars, but I didn't think it was to bad. Took me a few hours, but I wasn't in a rush. This was on a ALH.

My tranny has been shifting hard since I swapped the clutch/tranny fluid, but I'm pretty sure I just need to spend more time adjusting the cables. There easy to adjust, but I can't seem to get them in the ideal location. Good luck!

Who else had trouble starting last weekend?

How many other poeple had trouble getting thier TDI-PD's going last weekend (with the -15F and below temperatures)?

Mine seems to have gotten a lot worse after having the "cold start update" done. It took 15 tries plus a battery charge. Lots of black smoke while cranking.

Go to diesel geeks sitehe has very clear instructions on how to adjust cables. He even tells how to make the secret special tool for holding the shifter in place.

A GTG in St. Cloud on 4/22 sounds good to me - easy day-trip range from the majority of MN. I don't expect to need anything done on my car, since I was at the Lake Mills GTG last weekend.

Some of the discussion that we should have that day would be the MPG drive to Philly - it would start from the Fleet Farm in Oakdale at about 7:30pm CDT on Wed 8/30 and arrive at the hotel about 8:30pm EDT on 8/31, but this schedule is predicated on there being a minimum ratio of 1.5 drivers per car. Bookworm, did you come up with a different set of stops and periods at each? I know I can make Commodore Perry on one tank from Oakdale; last year I made it from downtown Minneapolis to one of the truckstops at exit 71 on the Ohio Turnpike on one tank....

Rob I have not come up with a set of changes at all, I thought your route was very complete and I did not know how many people would be in this caravan. Lets stay with your plan.

Spamjohnson, you want to put this up on the GTG board? April 22 works for me, and this does not conflict with either the Michigan GTG or with Impexfest.
