After Rocket Chip, throwing codes!

I had Jeff from Rocket Chip tune my stock 2003 Beetle to RC2, yesterday at our NE Dyno Day in MA.
Took for test ride right after, and it was great- no codes. He had to pull the ECU manually and program it on his bench, after a failed attempt to tune via the DLC. He said that Beetle automatics can pose problems with communication over the port.

Let the car sit for a few more hours, and drove home. Immediately got a CEL that stayed on. The car drove fine. I scanned it at home and got

Could the ECU contacts be loose or dirty? I have a call into Jeff.

I'm not sure about your engines-on mine I have the AHU w/ RC2/3 switchable-had Jeff switch it to 3-he said it may throw code-it did-cleared w/ my scangauge-then I had it switched back to RC2-I didn't like how car shifted w/the RC3.Hope you can get it worked out-I assume you have vag-com-clear codes and keep driving. How do you like chip though??

In my very limited experience, do you think the ECU being removed maybe had something to do with it? I would at least pull the fuse and see if they cleared.

I would remove the ECU and reseat it as no communication from ECU is most likely bad connection at plug. Less likely is Relay 109 intermittent failure but it would show a bunch more codes.

Your cel is most likely due to the glow plug circuit. The other codes are due to the ecm being unpluged and pluged back together. Clean your glow plug harness, check the glow plugs for continuity and clear the codes. The only one that I have experienced coming back is the glow plug fault. If cleaning doesn't cure the problem then replace the harness and/or offending glow plugs. As a caution only remove and install the glow plugs when the engine is cold and be very careful to not cross thread the glow plugs if you have to remove them.

I agree. You have a glow plug code. The others are incidental to removing the ecu for board work. I'll check your system for you if you like. It'll be quick.

Exactly, all the codes are immaterial, and are most likely remnants of the chiptuning, except for the glowplug.

yet another vote for the GP code causing the light. My guess is it's coincidental. Clear codes and try again.

Agree with the rest of the comments here. Focus on the Glow plugs.
However, do more than just a continuity check on the plugs. IMHO (three new glow plugs later) a resistance measurement is required on all four plugs. Out of spec resistance will give you a code, and not necessarily for the correct plug position either.
Also the ECM can be a total PIA to seat properly if you accidentally crunch the flexible orange gasket seated in the connector.
Good luck

If you clear the codes, and the glow plug one comes back check for a loose an/or unplugged connector in the vicinity. I seem to remember getting an odd glow plug error code after I left another one of the nearby connectors unplugged when re-connecting everything after my egr cooler removal. I thought it was kind of odd at the time, but after I re-connected the offending sensor and cleared the codes it never came back.

Hi,

Sorry I didn't get back yesterday, I didn't get home till 2am. The GP fault is just that, not tuning related. They burn out like lightbulbs.

The other 2 codes are from removing fuse 11 and keying on ignition. They will clear themselves and have no consequence while running.

Let me know what you find with the continuity test. I just always replace all 4 gp's at 80k. The harness's can cook too. btw, don't pull the ecu, it's not that!

Well,

I found that #2 gp, which was the one mentioned in the scan,
at least I think it's #2 (second from left as I stand in front?), had an infinite resistance. The rest were like .4 ohms or so.
Grabbed a new set of plugs. I'll install those and see if that does it.

For some reason the glow plugs and injectors are not numbered the same. Injectors are 1-4 going left to right, glow plugs are backwards and are 4-1 going left to right. So if the #2 glow plug is bad then it's the second one from the right. Don't ask me why. Sounds like you have a bad #3 glow plug. It's a good idea to just replace them all at once like it sounds like you are planning on doing.
