Hi All,

I have a 2000 ALH 1.9 TDI
And cant pass emissions inspection due to the P1619 code.

Since I have replaced and verified the glow plugs themselves.
Wire harness, relay and still no power to the harness even when coolant sensor disconnected.

I am running out of ideas.

Did clear engine after replaced all this but it keeps coming back.

Check engine comes always within 30-40 sec after i start the engine.

Is there any way to pas the emissions test by bypassing the check engine or trick the ECU of thinking signal is high or low?

Any help is Appreciated:confused:

BDWY Did check the wiring on the battery as well and cleaned the terminals

P1619 Issue Replaced Plugs, wire Harness Relay etc..

Could it be the ECU?

I really do not want to replace it unless I have to.

Is there a way to check it?

I checked the fuses in the battery compartment and replaced all relays below.

Check for short to ground: multimeter in GP3, GND and GP1, GND. Check for continuity. For best results, disconnect ECM (and battery) first.

If open, trace the signals from the ECM to the socket:

T121/42->GP1 (GP indicates relay socket pin position)

Are those 2 pins on the relay the center blade ones.

they only go to the ecu, as far i can tell.

there are 4 on the corner labeled ST, 31, D, 86 on the relay itself are these just ground posts?

ST - control/diag pin
86 - Switched power, active until key removed from ignition after starting.
D - Switched power, active until ignition switch is no longer in the "run" position.
31 - Ground/common

ST is the signal you should trace (pin 1 to 42, fault code is for this), check for voltage at D and 86 with the ignition in the run position.

JCrews is the "Man"

I owe you lunch!

One more question:

pins 4 and 6 (G1/2, and G3/4) go to the glow plugs directly.

ST goes to ECU pin 42.

what about pins 2, 9, 7

Pin 3 is the big ground blade (30) on the relay?

Which one is the ST signal coming from the ecu the "Bigger" or "Smaller" connector on the ECU?

Also what is the signal is it Active high x? Volts when relay plugged in and Key in the Ignition

And maybe active Low when key in the off position.

I just want to verify the signal strength from the ecu?

2: Power supply for glow plugs (fuse on battery)
7: Pin 33 of ECM, should be marked 86.
9: Relay 109 "output" terminal 87.

The pin numbers are molded on the ECM connectors, and each connector continues the sequence (there is only one pin 1 among both).

Pin 3 is connected to ground.

I don't know the exact signal characteristic of ST. I'd have to test it, but the ECM probably pulls it down to ground when it wants glow plugs on.

One more question?

On the 180 Relay

I have pins 31, D1 and 86

How do they correlate to the schematic pins

2,9,7

Thank You very much

Hey fellow newb,
did your car have a harder time starting up in mornings (esp when cold) at all? and when it initially started in the morning after a few seconds of tryign to start, did white smoke blow out? I have my CEL on right now and is throwing a p1619 code also... but i just bought the car so im not sure of its history. i have been all over the forum searching...

i seen some technical stuff you guys did with the relay and ECM...but i want to be sure that is my problem before i do it... process of elimination i guess should begin... i have replacement GPs but will see if that even fixes the problem. I will need to pass inspection soon too!

Check out the glow plug trouble shooting thread in the how-to section at the top of this 101 section. It might save you some $$$.
