Stock suspension life depends on how the car is driven. With Constant highway driving that doesn't flex the shocks too much, they could last upwards of 300k miles.

But with lots of city driving and bumpy roads, you could wear out a set in a matter of 50k miles.

To check the shocks, push down on one corner of the car rather hard and try to get it to bounce. If it bounces more than twice, then new shocks may be in order.

What slamhouse said. That, and leakage from a shock/strut is also usually a sign that it is on its way out.

Many suspensions also get replaced because the driver wants something firmer, more sporty. If you are trying to justify that, then just about any excuse will do. Improved handling, safety, 'general driving pleasure', easing of self-loathing, - yup, just about anything!
