I own a 2000 Jetta TDI 5 speed manual ALH

Recently, the rack and pinion blew.

I went to a shop and dropped in a new rack. The airbag light kept coming on even with the newly updated OEM clockspring. We swapped out the airbag with another one for fun, but still had the light coming back after being cleared.

The code we were getting was 00588.

thanks for any input, greatly appreciated.

2001 golf tdi 4 door auto now a manual, mine, 2000 golf 2 door M/T son's,daughters 98 NB non-TDI 2.0, 2003 TDI NB for next daughter, head repaired and on road, gluten for punishment got another tdi 2001NB,another yellow tdi NB
Pull the air bag off the steering wheel and check and make sure the ground is tight on the blade that the black wire is connected to. I had a silicate issue but mine started when I hit a pot hole. I crimped down on the female portion and made sure it was a tight connection. Erased the code and all is well. Just my .02 ;)

Are you reading the Airbag module with VCDS?

Ok great info. I will certainly have the mechanic take off the airbag to check the ground connections as a start.

It is showing code 00588. I didn't get the print out but something about the "airbag being overcharged".

I threw in a new rack and pinion and clock spring and swapped the airbag with a used airbag. Light went off for a few days.
Light came back on after wheel alignment, only when I finally made a full turn.

I read somewhere about some airbag connector under the seats causing a "false code" where airbags will deploy but light is on. I will take out the seats and delete the yellow connectors and see how that goes if I could find that TSB for the procedure.

I'll also check those connections behind the airbag and update in the next 2 weeks once it all gets done.

Don't play with these knuckleheads.
Go to small claims court and file a case ($50) .
