Looks like the cat came apart from the next pipe downstream of it.
1. What’s the best yet cheapest way to reconnect these two parts solidly?
I’m willing to DIY if the result is definitely strong.
I don’t have a welding machine (yet) so can’t DIY weld yet.
I have a propane torch though.
A. Insider secret to get this done for under $20 at a shop?
B. Best to drop $50-100 on HFreight 80 amp arc welding machine, mask, gloves, sticks, etc, and DIY in place on the pavement?
C. Mechanically reattach them with some type of bolt on pipe union connector?

Ah...I really don't miss the Rust belt...You wont be able to weld anything to that rusted cat.

So you say C, mechanically join the car to the pipe with a union connector?
Surely this same issue has happened before to other forum members...
1. Which pipe union type did you use?
2. Size?
3. Any idea where sold?

That's a common failure point on these, but you can have a pipe welded to this. You won't be able to just sleeve anything to it with a clamp but you can have a sleeve welded over the top of the stump. You will have to slip joint over the top of the pipe downstream of this one.

That’s good news.
I assume this mighta happened to one of your cars at some point?
You DIY weld on a sleeve ?

I've done tons of these, easy fix. Slip an adapter pipe over the broken piece so it contacts the cat further up, As far as it will go. Clamp it Downstream clamp it over the other pipe.

Easy peasey.

Everybody and their Grandmother has done these......way I do it is to use a cut-off wheel and go right around the weld of the broken pipe and pull what's left of it out of the back of the cat, clean up your cut a little bit and prepare the metal and weld in a new pipe in it's place. You may have to adapt up in size to fit the inside of the cat opening. Weld those too.
