Just had my 2012 Jetta TDI 20K service and they performed a recall service.

So I had my free 20k service yesterday and everything went ok. They also performed a recall service. The recall service was for installation of bright yellow diesel only stickers inside the fuel door. One is on the door and one below the gas cap. The one on the door says no gas and gas is crossed out. I guess to many people were putting gas into the TDI's.

Didn't think the problem was much with the owners unless you fill up at bp where all the nozzles are green. Thought the problem was with the stations where sometimes the deisel tanks are contaminated because they were refilled with gas?

The color of the pump is not a problem. Anyone should be able to identify which handle is diesel and which is gasoline regardless of the color.
YES, alls you need to do is READ. I double check everytime i fill up.

Interesting. We just took delivery of our '12 Jetta about 2 weeks ago, and there are no such stickers on the vehicle anywhere. What is the date of the recall? No big deal, I guess. I'll be sure to mention it when I take it in for the 90 day check.

The recall date is yesterday iirc. Next time your car is in for service, they'll update it with these as well ;)

Fantastic.

I guess this is how VW is going to fix the HPFP implosions.

Way to go VW.

Whatever makes VW feel better.
Maybe it will prevent some failures (keep in mind: not everyone that owns a TDI is so keen on making sure they for sure only use diesel, and double check before pumping. Lots of stupid Americans!)
For the rest of us - the 50 cents in stickers will make VWoA feel better before forking over $8K under warranty.

THAT is the problem...I don't understand how people make this mistake. I'm not saying I never make mistakes, but this one is beyond me. Are people pressing buttons with their eyes closed?

You cannot go by the color of the handle. It's not standardized. There's a reason the diesel button is separated from all the regular gasoline buttons when diesel and gasoline are at the same pump.

True. But most people assume that it is standardized. The handle is green on the diesel pumps at almost all fuel stations except BP where they are all green. If someone is traveling and fueling in an area that has BP and they don't have BP at home, the mistake is easy to make. I nearly made that error on a trip once. That's when I realized green did not = diesel at all fuel stations.

This is exactly what everyone keeps trying to stress: Your statement above is only valid in your local area... It does not even apply statewide let alone nationwide.

There is no standardization, period.

And, like I said, even if the the diesel handle is black and the regular handle is green the diesel button is separated from the 3 regular buttons. Plus if you were to select gasoline you would need to choose between regular, midgrade, and premium. I don't understand how someone could choose between the 3 regular options without realizing they're choosing gasoline.

All of BP's handles are green, and even still, the nozzle's are different sizes, the prices are different, and if you have to flip a lever or push a button it's labeled there as well. Nobody will ever be able to convince me that it's easy to make that mistake.

I work in healthcare and see the exact same mistake. Vials of medication get recalled because they are labeled like and colored like something else.
Bottom line is people see what they expect to see. In a stress situation that kind of mistake is more common than you would ever guess.
Should they read the label? YES! Do they read the label instead of just looking at color? Not always.
Check out ISMP.org. Right now there is a recall being organized because generic 60mg enoxaprin is colored just like brand name lovenox (enoxaprin) 40mg. Mistakes have already occurred due to this.
Its human nature. A way your brain saves time when it's in a hurry. Works most of the time. Not all of the time.

if you live in southern ontario and do the highway 400 commute, you'd be an idiot to miss the 14 diesel pumps next to all the 53' trailers at the Husky station. They finally have a loyalty program to accumulate points for free diesel too....

I can't see how people make this mistake. When I go to fill up my wife's gasoline car, I have to press a button to select which grade of gas. A lot of diesel pumps will even have a button to select which fuel grade, even though there is only one. The pump itself will also say diesel. I have a warning label on my dash to use ULSD only. That same warning is on the fuel door. The fuel cap has "Diesel" written on it. There really is no legitimate excuse to misfuel unless the delivery guy filled the wrong tank; then there is nothing you could have done for that one.

Pump colours are different and not standard. The majority of the pumps may be green where you are, but here the diesel pumps are all yellow and the only green pumps I've seen within a few miles of my house are gasoline pumps at the Husky stations. The only legitimate gripe we can possibly have is the different sized pump nozzles (I've come across 3 so far and the truck nozzle is not fun to use without an adapter).

I can see someone fueling up at the wrong pump. For someone who's not used to driving diesel cars "all their life" or possibly switching from gas to diesel every few years....I can see it happening. Kinda like locking your keys in the car. Sometimes $hit happens. You're half asleep, huge hangover, your ex is dating a millionaire porn star, etc.
Completely different issue if it happens to you three or four or more times. That is where they should release the hounds.

I've been driving gasoline cars "all my life" and I still don't see it as a valid excuse. As for switching between diesel and gasoline cars, I do it all the time. We have 2 vehicles, 1 diesel and 1 gasoline. Unless it's for commuting to work or any other longer distance drive, I end up driving whichever car is not being blocked. I also end up fueling up both of them most of the time, so I am constantly switching between different pumps.

It is all about paying attention to what is going on. I have 1 diesel and 1 gas car. Never had the issue with filling the wrong car.
