I got into a situation like this while trying to help out some kids with a Infinity J something that needed brakes, axles, ball joints etc. The existing calipers were pretty stuck so we decided to replace those as well.
The passenger side went on like butter, and by the time we got around to the drivers side I was getting tired. The caliper wouldn't fit onto the bracket. I tried it half dozen times thinking I was missing something due to being tired. After hours of thinking I was incompetent, I took off the driver's bracket and took it back to the parts store to compare it with the one I took off. Sure enough the bracket had a little different geometry. After getting a refund for that one and retrieving the original, driving back home, job finished in another 10 minutes.
Lesson learned is to keep all parts until the job is done, and don't try to help out poor kids with cars nicer than mine.
