Fuel Inj. Pump - Slow Fuel Leak

Hey All,

This past weekend I was checking my oil level when I noticed what I
believe to be a fuel leak between the sprocket that runs my fuel injector
pump and the pump itself. I'm guessing, though I'm no mechanic, that
it's a failed seal in the shaft that runs the pump.

A little bit of background - my TDI is a 2001 1.9L U.S. Golf assembled
in Brazil with 51K miles on it. I bought it this past spring with 41K
miles on it. I've been running B100 in it for 10K miles and have had zero
problems with it thusfar. No matter what happens, I'm going to continue
to burn B100 despite the rubber products VWAG is putting in their engines.
If I need to buy a new pump because my current one is unservicable, I'd
like to know where if possible to purchase one with modern fluoropolymer
seals. Ideally I'd only need to purchase a seal and get busy with some
tools, but... Maybe this seal will just weep a few cc's of bio-d a week
and last another 50K miles, but I'd luv to hear what my options are.

Hello Grady,

First off, thanks for the pointer to the similar thread on this. It looks like Dorado's leak was so slow as to not be an issue. Interestingly he was also running B100. I spoke with Kumar Plocher of Yokayo biofuels this weekend at the SF Green Festival about this leak. He indicated that the pumps installed in North American market TDIs don't have the Teflon seals that the European TDI's have. If anyone can substantiate this claim, I'd be interested to know.

I've yet to wipe the bio-d off to check the accumulation rate of this leak. Living with a super slow leak will work if the bio-d doesn't migrate to hot and/or chemically sensitive parts of the engine. Ah well... /images/graemlins/smirk.gif
