Any idea how extensive is the damage?

oilhammer: When a VW CRTDI blows a turbo, how often will it cause this extensive amount of damage? Would there have been some alarming sounds prior to the turbo breaking?
On the turbo fail discussion most never get any warning at alll, some here a faint buzz, dentist drill sound a day or so prior- most likely the blades making contact with the housing due to the shaft bearing wearing out.

To have the dealership replace the entire longblock? Beaucoup dinero. Thankfully VW will be footing the bill.

just make sure they remove all the turbo debris from the air intake and intercooler before firing up that new engine. Seen people use a solvent tank and a leaf blower to clean up the intake, dunk, scrub- blow out & repeat. A lot of metal can "stick around" in that oily mess

We can't make sure of anything as it is in the dealer's capable hands!

Best of luck I'd wonder if they'll just toss a turbo on, reseat injectors, and cross their fingers.

Remember it's the bean counters that make the decisions.
