2001 Beetle - how to get left headlight out when safety latch handle is broken?

I have a 2001 Beetle TDI and need to replace the AC condenser - so I am trying to take front grill and light support off to access - but the little black lever that releases the front head light so it can slide or be pulled out is broken - how can I remove head light and replace broken head light support lever latch handle with its bracket? - it has a sliding/locking in place thing-ama-jig - kinda squirrely design if you ask me!

try sticking a blade in between the latch and popping it open.

Mine broke a while back as well. Ended up lifting up the hood just enough to get my needle nose pliers in there and pull the latch arm out to release the safety latch.

I replied in the other thread, there is a nice how-to pdf already made up for this.
