I'm struggling to believe this......

at 45mph it may be possible but I have a hard time believing it too.

Easy enough to believe. 1.6 liter engine. Euro smog standards. The car gets over 60 in ordinary mixed driving, put a skilled driver, better tires and some aero fittings and there you go over 80 MPG.

Guinness Book of Records people accept only vehicles 6 months or less of age.
I have tried to have them accept older cars to no avail. They have repeatedly stated that using a 1996~97 Passat wagon (27+ gallon capacity) would not be considered a valid attempt.
What's the use of a 2,000+ mile range if there is no widely accepted credentialing organization?

They should add that French autoroutes are very scarcely populated. The only slowing down on them would have been for the tolls, and they most likely used the auto ones (transmitter in the windscreen).

I did the same trip a couple of months ago on a bank holiday weekend, and traffic was still very light then.

If people here can do 60+ MPG with a 45MPG rated car, then I don't see why it would be so hard to do 80 with a car rated at 60MPG.

I'll be the first to admit that my disbelief is fueled by jealousy...

read this in my local gazette, was pretty impressed 36 hours of driving solid, i was sick driving to london and back at 60mph...
