To the Passat Guru's...

I have done the BSM fix, timing bbelt work done and had it chipped by Bora. Ever since the Bora reflash, this car has been throwing fault codes. Car didn't start today. Had to turn it off and then back on. Did that 3 times until it finally started. Check Engine light came back on. It has been off and on sporadically. The Mass air flow problem has come off an on. I always attributed future check engine lights to it. I know. Bad idea. So here are the new fault codes it threw today:

I am having a hard time believing the car has all these issues all of a sudden. Besides today, it starts, runs, accelerates, brakes and idles great. Gets 36MPG mixed driving, mostly freeway. Seems normal, right? However these new codes make me think something like the ECU might be bad or the programming might be. Opinions? Car has 76K. Any of this under warranty? I hate taking it to the stealership. : ( Feedback and education is greatly appreciated...

Bora chip. Steel glow plug voltage with steel glow plugs installed. Standard tune for better fuel economy. Same tune they give everyone else. Nothing special. No special mods to the car. Stock besides the chip, BSM upgrade, PhatNoise box for the stereo, and steel glow plugs

If you look close at your scan list, where the fault codes are indicated shows missing data, intermittent communication with the ECU, missing messages, etc. Plus, all the modules you reportedly scanned do not show up in the list you posted.

Was the ECU removed to do the flash? Maybe a poor ECU connection?

I doubt there is a problem with the tune considering you have comm. problems with the trans and they don't tune the trans, also I have the same tune myself and I don't have any problems. But it can't hurt to check with them anyways.

The flash was done while in the car. I used their software and flash unit to do the scan. I don't think the ECU would have been removed for the BSM or timing belt change, right? I will open up the ECU compartment in the morning and disconnect, reconnect the unit firmly to make sure it has a good connection. Its a start...

I have asked Aaron for help and he offered to take it back to a stock tune. However, I am weary of doing that in case the ECU has gotten weak from the first flash. I am nervous a second flash back to stock will fry the ECU. Should that even be a concern? I have been on this tune close to a year now. Not sure if Aaron would honor taking the car back to stock at this point, but he was notified that the car did not seem to like the tune and we saw zero MPG improvements with the same driving habits. I will give him a call tomorrow as well to see if we can do that to rule out the tune.

Did you verify 12.5 volts before flashing the ECU? That is how I fried a spare ECU, and this is probably a specialty of the dealer as well.

Did not verify 12.5V. Was not told to.

Update: I unplugged the battery and then removed the ECU. I unplugged the ECU connectors and plugged them back in. I did this a few times to make sure any possible corrosion would be removed and it is a snug fit. I plugged it back in and reconnected the battery. I turned the car on and let it sit for about 30 seconds to calibrate ( if its even needed). I turned it over and it kept turning over. The car beeped and the display said "STOP". I turned the car off and then back on. Now the glow plug light keeps flashing and the "Emmissions Workshop" comes on. Car no longer starts. Great. Wife is going to be pissed when she gets up to go to work and has no car to drive. Welcome to my VW nightmare. : ) The closest VW mechanic to me is Marty Bergel but dont think the B5.5 Passat is his specialty. Anyone have any ideas before carting this piece of metal off to a mechanic? I have 2 05 B5.5 Passat TDI's. I guess I could take the ECU out of my car (stock ECU) and throw it into her car to see if anything changes, yet now I fear more problems getting my car's parts into the mix and I need something to drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will let my wife take my car to work and take the next couple of days off until I get this worked out. Thanks for any ideas in advance...

I took some electric cleaner and cleaned the heck out of the ECU pins and then female pins on the harness. Same error on the dash. New codes:

Car now starts after clearing codes, removing the battery, and letting the ECU sit overnight. No check engine light. I am almost 100% positive this is a bad tune. Sending the ECU out to get completely erased and reflashed. If that does not fix it, then it must be the ECU itself but highly unlikely, IMO. What a headache. Thanks for the feedback and input.

Sent the ECU out to RocketChip. Got it back and ZERO codes. Car starts and runs great. The Bora tune was not a good tune and Jeff mentioned it had values that were all over the board. I will be speaking to Aaron on a full or partial refund. I was never happy with that tune and now I know it wasn't right. Thanks for the replies. Here is the clear scan:

Car has been running great on the new RC1+ tune. No codes. MPG increased by a couple to 38 (mixed, but mostly freeway @ 75MPH). Aaron from Bora offered me a refund for the old tune. Very pleased. All is good...
