97 B4 tdi sedan with 5 lug upgrade... Needs rt. Axle

Hi gang,

I'm working on the restoration of this black 97 b4 tdi sedan that the PO did a 5 lug conversation on. I need a new passenger side axle, as the outer boots been torn for some time now.

The shop doing the work can't figure out which axle to install... I ASSUME it would be the GLX manual transmission axle?

Let me know if this is correct
Thanks,
Steve

Why not rebuild the one you have if it's OEM? I did the 5 lug swap a couple years ago, bought a replacement right side axle. Took one look at it,, no comparison with the original, decided to rebuild the OEM. Been trouble free since.

Certainly is worthwhile. What you do is use the factory axle and just put OEM quality CV joints on it. Most after market axles are junk.

All B4 MT cars used 02A gearboxes, even the ABA 2.0L powered cars.

So it stands to reason that the axles follow the suspension type, 4x100 'base' and 5x100 'plus.'

As long as you remember this you will be able to pick the correct axle for your application. Or in this case you can also pick to just install a new outer CV too.

Almost forgot. If the inner boot does not have a hole in it, you could just replace the boot on it when the axle is out of the car. Most likely with a torn boot like your outer, the CV joint will have to be replaced.

yup it's the outer on passenger side... I'm was hoping to just replace the torn boot
