Okay,

Why would you get a tax bill? It's not income. There's no "gain" or interest. You're just being made whole. Only if there were " punitive" damages would there be tax consequences.
No. Not taxable unless you used it for business and wrote off the purchase price.
Thanks for the notes. I recall the Goodwill Packages being non-taxable because they were considered "rebates." I wasn't sure how this would play out in the tax world.

So here's my situation:
2011 JSW 6MT w/ estimated 53K by September.
Purchased for $20,340 Out the door in March '15 <<<Overpaid for the only 6MT CPO Mint-condition available for 300 miles>>>
Base Plus Features buyback is (Worksheet 1A):
$19,097 - $840 MT + $600 Pano Roof = $18857
If I drive it like usual to just work, I'd likely fall into the $2,070 mileage bracket. I'd like to go travel some this summer and fall, so I'm thinking the $1620 or $1,200 range.
So:
$20,057-$20,477 Mileage adjusted PLUS the $1,000 goodwill package puts me slightly ahead with no major loss except the $500 40k service. I guess I kinda just drove the car for 18 months for just the price of gas.

I'm in no way jumping for joy like some 1st gen owners. I paid the high input cost because it was the only CPO JSW w/ 6MT I could find for almost 3 months in a 300-mile radius. The dealership knew I wanted it bad and just wouldn't come down.

If the buyback numbers don't increase a bit before finalizing, I'll opt out or take the fix that never happens. I'd opt out before taking the fix. IF the fix incentive was paid out BEFORE the fix, I'd take it. At least if I do wreck it, the lost value/depreciation would be taken care of already.

If you remember the 2011 MSRP dropped something like $2500 from the '10 model. Making that discrepancy look even more mystifying.
Yeah it really makes no sense. 2011 was the year they decontented the cars (at least the Jetta) and went with cheaper suspension, etc.

Buyback mileage adjustment: -$2,100
Total buyback amount $24,827

Here is where it gets even better, I read somewhere that we have until oct, 2018 to make a decision so waiting until oct, 2018 and driving an extra up to 47k miles costs me a whopping $2,520 extra still netting me $22,307 for a 5 1/2 year old car with up to 124,176 miles on
it!

This one is even better, My brother-in-law bought a used 2012 passat tdi sel is august of 2014 for 15k, it had 94k miles on it but he only drives about 6 or 7k a year so now it has approx. 105k miles on it, assuming no more than 108k this oct. he would get $20,057
but if he waits until oct. 2018 then because he drives less than the allowed amount he would get an extra $370! or $20,427 assuming his total mileage is less than 119,175 at that time.

So he will pay for fuel, oil changes, the new tires he put on and cover his insurance to drive the car for 50 months, WOW! what a deal!

OK - 2013 Jetta TDI Premium w/DSG & Fender audio & sunroof - location is Washington State - 19200 miles --- and counting.

Base model Jetta buyback = $21737 + Fender Audio $420 + sunroof $660 = $22817
Miles adjust (19200-) = $3090

So $3090+22817=$25907 for buyback. That is just over $1k more than I paid for the car with tax & license. I paid $24974.

Did I do this right? I think I did.

How many cars give you money back when you sell it?

I'm all in for the buyback - cut me a check or show me a good reason to stay with the brand - and it better be a good deal - no - a great deal.

With all the crap that hangs off these motors I'm ready for something a bit less complicated and a lot less expensive to fix when something gives it up.

My numbers:

2009 Jetta Sportwagen with 96,000 miles (probably a little over 100k by October)

Base value $13,877
No DSG -$600
Pano roof +$600
(why is there no option adjustment for rear airbags?)
Total $13,877

Mileage deduction = $0

Total buyback amount = $13,877

Today's KBB value (private sale, Very Good condition) = $7426

If they are willing to pay me almost twice what KBB says it is worth, I guess VW can buy back my car. A 2009 is probably impossible to fix for a reasonable amount of money. I sure hope there are some new TDIs available by the time this happens. We shall see what we shall see.

Have Fun!

Don

P.S. I wonder if the car has to be running for a full buyback. I am tempted to remove my 2micron fuel mods before giving up the car, but I might have to tow it to the dealer if I do this.

Base buyback: $14,927

Options: power sunroof
Option adjustment: +$480

Current mileage: ~74500 (averaging ~5000/year or ~400/mo for the last 2+ years)
Adjusted mileage (assuming I sell it back in Nov 2016): 74500 + (400 x 4) - (15 x 1042) = 60,470
Estimated mileage adjustment: +$660

Estimated total adjusted buyback amount: 14,927 + 480 + 660 = $16,067

I bought the car early May in 2014 for $17999 (including fees, no tax in NH). Has been a flawless car ever since I bought it. Still love it. If I add in the $1000 I got last Nov, I basically paid $932 to drive the car for 2+ years.

Two TDIs in the fleet, which we'll most likely end up keeping. I could see myself jumping to a GTI if the price were right, though. Hope the numbers are a good reference.

2011 JSW TDI DSG
60,120 miles, CPO, purchased in 2013. Just had the 60K service covered by the dealer cards.

Buyback:
$19,067 base, Desert SW
+ $600 sunroof
+ $840 mileage adjusted to June
or
+ $1,200 mileage adjusted to October

June base mileage: 60,120. 1,042 x 9 = 9,378. 60,120 - 9,378 = 50,742 adjusted, eligible for the 50,001-55K bracket, + $840.
October base mileage: +~500 miles/mo = 62,120. 1,042 x 13 = 13,546. 62,120 - 13,546 = 48,574 adjusted, eligible for the 45,001-50K bracket, + $1,200.
Buyback Total: $20,507 in June, $20,867 in October.

Mod:
$5,667 base
+ $600 sunroof
+ $75 mileage adjusted to June
or
+ $200 adjusted to October

Total: $6,342 in June, $6,467 in October.

2015 Jetta TDI SEL DSG
10,000 miles, standard lighting package, purchased new in July 2015.

Buyback:
$28,006 base, Desert SW
+ $1,140 mileage adjusted to June and October

June base mileage, 10,000. 1,042 x 9 = 9,378. 10,000 - 9,378 = 622 adjusted.
October base mileage +~700 miles/mo = 12,800. 1,042 x 13 = 13,546. 12,800 - 13,546 = -746 (0 adjusted)
0-5,000 mile bracket is eligible for $1,140.

Buyback Total: $29,146

Mod:
$7,157 base
+ $190 mileage adjusted to June and October

Not a bad deal, but not great either considering I still need a car and won't have a trade in. I am honestly on the fence, would definitely jump on it if the used private party value.

My wife has a 2014 JSW with 30,150 miles

The value currently it is

27,647 for the buyback value
-900 Manual Transmission
$26,747

The mile adjustment for July is 10 months so deduct 10 x 1042 or

30,150 current odometer
-10,420 adjustment
19,730 miles which barely qualifies for $960 mileage credit

The adjusted buyback value is $27,707 for a car we paid $27,200 OTD.

If she does sell her car back it will likely be towards the May 2018 deadline. She is currently averaging 17,000 miles per year, so likely the mileage credit will be $510 if we sell the car back to VW, which is basically a break even point. We spent about $500 on a trailer hitch and wiring. I also bought a set of snow tires for $750. With $1000 Goodwill package it will cost us $250 for 3 1/2 years and ~55,000 miles of ownership. This will be the cheapest car I will probably ever own.

30000 * 1042 = 13546

The PDF tables are the NADA values plus the additional compensation. This is clear from the "Further Adjustment" box at the end of the mileage adjustment table.

I think I got this right. I'm getting hit for the mileage, man.

2015 Golf SEL, 56,000 miles
Base: $29,546
Mileage adjustment: 9X1042=9,378 , 56,000-9378= 47,622
Adjustment=$2,040
29,546-2,040=$27,506 buyback
Loan amount remaining: $18,570
Amount I'll have in pocket: $8,936

Am I getting this right? Obviously I'll have more mileage in October and total will fluctuate a couple hundred.

What's your opinion on?
"Note: amounts for 2015 model year are approximate"
Will amounts go up or down?

There was a lot of buzz about buyback PLUS a compensation amount in the days leading up to yesterday's announcement, what happened to that whole "Up to $7,000 in compensation apart from buyback" thing?

Considering my circumstances would it be best to take the car off the road until the buyback?

I seem to remember seeing a clause somewhere about VW paying loan off up to 130%, is that if I was upside down in my loan?

I don't have the original wheels on the car because I downgraded from the 18s to the 16s?

I also have a 100K platinum warranty that I bought through dealer, I hope I can get some of that money back?

That's more along the lines of what the vwvortex article says. I don't know. I guess I'll just wait to see what the website says when they finally get it all up and running and providing actual information.

Mathematical Analysis on buyback values

I did some mathematical analysis on the buyback that I thought I would share.

VW decided to base the value on the NADA trade in value as of Sept 2015 with 20% premium and $2987 compensation payment.

Here is the buyback value of Sportwagen listed in the settlement. I used the base model with DSG in the Northeast for all evaluations

  • 2009 13,997
  • 2010 15,467
  • 2011 19,157
  • 2012 20,837
  • 2013 24,317
  • 2014 27,647
  • 2015 25,771
Why is 2015 GSW value less than the 2014 JSW, it I because the MSRP $28,485(2014) was more than MSRP $26,515 (2015). If you add the $1970 MRSP difference to 2015 25,771 (27,741) the depreciation between the 2015 is minimal. Also the 2015 values are estimated. I suspect NADA didn't publish the 2015 values as of September 2015. It looks like the 2015 estimate value might be getting the short end of the stick.

You can figure out the trade in value of September 2015 by subtracting 2987 from the above buyout numbers and then dividing by 1.2 to remove the 20% premium. Side note: it baffles me why VW did not round up $2987 to $3000

  • 2009 9,175
  • 2010 10,400
  • 2011 13,475
  • 2012 14,875
  • 2013 17,775
  • 2014 20,550
  • 2015 18,987
Looking at todays NADA book value, I listed the retail value and then trade in values.

  • 2009 9,100 5,825
  • 2010 10,275 6,875
  • 2011 12,125 8,875
  • 2012 13,575 10,300
  • 2013 14,400 11,225
  • 2014 17,150 13,750
  • 2015 20,225 16,600
We can calculate the difference in trade values from Sept to now. I did the dollar value and % loss

  • 2009 3350 36.5%
  • 2010 3525 33.9%
  • 2011 4600 34.1%
  • 2012 4575 30.7%
  • 2013 6550 36.8%
  • 2014 6800 33.4%
  • 2015 2387 12.5%
The drop is value is pretty consistent 30% loss except for 2015 seem to be to currently holding their value.

You can look at the spread between the current book value and trade in value, which basically the average dealer profit.

  • 2009 9,100 5,825 = 3275
  • 2010 10,275 6,875 = 3400
  • 2011 12,125 8,875 = 3250
  • 2012 13,575 10,300 = 3275
  • 2013 14,400 11,225 = 3175
  • 2014 17,150 13,750 = 3400
  • 2015 20,225 16,600 = 3625
The dealer profit on used 2009 to 2015 is basically the same, dealer are trying to make ~$3250 on this level of car no matter what value is. This can give one the approximate retail value if you know the trade in value.
The table below, I put in the September 2015 values and multiplied those by the 20% to come up with VW premium.

  • 2009 9,175 $1835
  • 2010 10,400 $2080
  • 2011 13,475 $2695
  • 2012 14,875 $2975
  • 2013 17,775 $3555
  • 2014 20,550 $4110
  • 2015 18,987 $3797
In my prior example of showing dealer profit of ~3250, one can see that 2009's with 20% premium aren't getting retail value for their car plus the 2987. I took the $2987 added it to 20% (this is also modification value in column of those charts) and then subtracted out the 3250 difference in premium. This show an approximation of the premium over the Sept 2015 values. I also put the % in term of the premium over estimate 2015 retail value.

  • 2009 $1835 + 2987 - 3250 = 1572 12.6%
  • 2010 $2080 +2987 - 3250 = 1817 13.3%
  • 2011 $2695 + 2987 -3250 = 2432 14.5%
  • 2012 $2975 + 2987 -3250 = 2712 15.0%
  • 2013 $3555 +2987 -3250 = 3292 15.6%
  • 2014 $4110 + 2987 - 3250 = 3847 16.2%
  • 2015 $3797 + 2987 - 3250 = 3534 15.9%
The percentage in general seem to go up as the vehicle is newer and since older models are worthless the premium payments are lower as well.

The good new is the value is fixed to September 2015, all of the TDI would have lost some value between now and then. If you look at the difference between the model years it is on average about $3k per year. Even if it was only $2k per year, the participant of the buy back are gaining from the fixed value.

The mileage adjustments. The NADA has table in the back for the class of vehicle and they are just general mileage adjustment for that class of vehicle. I have never felt the mileage adjustment truly represented the TDI value for high mile vehicles. (this is just my opinion) It looks like the charts apply the 20% premium to the mileage charts as well. So this mean the mileage deductions are getting penalized an additional 20%. This seems hardly fair to me.

My personally recommendation would be if you think your car is going to be able to reliably make it to or near May 2018, it would probably be in your best interest to do so. It would have normally lost another $4500 for the newer models in the next year half and even if it does loss some mileage value from exceeding the 1042/month mileage adjustment (12,500 year). It will be relatively minimal unless for some reason your driving habit change drastically.

I just saw in another post that the 2015 have another set of values based on the VIN, so those currently can't be calculated, so ignore those values.
