Awesome, thanks for the info. How do I go about reading voltages for the crank sensor wiring with the vcds (if that's possible)? Hard to get to without removing the oil filter housing to check with my meter.

Already replaced the fuel filter so I hope it's not that. Couple questions though. The lid on the fuel filter housing, how pertinent is it to be flush/sealed? One of the bolts stripped out, and that area of the lid has a gap about 1/8" where as the rest is flush.

I also noticed on the inside of the lid, there's a plastic portion that seats against the top of the filter. There's an o ring around this. When removing it, I noticed a small hole just below the oring groove. Maybe an 1/8" in diameter, though I wouldn't say it's a circle. That's why I'm asking as it's not a circle and almost looks like a tool or something punctured it. Not sure if this is normal or if it would affect anything, as the lid seems to just seal the fuel filter housing, and that's done alabove the hole at the o ring. Though I'm not sure how the fuel feed, return, and whatever the 3rd line is, work inside/through the lid.

got the autoscan done, went through the document and deleted anything with no fault found. Note that the driver door electric shows a fault due to the **** harness VW skimped on. I have non stock tires for the pressure sensors. I disconnected the cam sensor plug and maf plug trying to see if id get a change in the running condition, likely why those are on there, but not 100%. Also have an aftermarket touchscreen from Eonon installed.

Here are the values I knew to get. Where do I check my timing? I looked on Ross tech and it said to go to group 000 then click switch to basic. Won't allow me to go to group 000 and the switch to basic button is greyed out.

I'll have to drink some coffee and look at this on the bigger monitor. Some notes:

1) on the fuel filter housing, if it's not sealed enough and is allowing air in, it'd definitely create a rough running engine. I haven't dealt with those issues on the TDIs I've owned, but I know from other diesels that it's possible to leak air into the system without leaking fuel back out

2) your recorded cam position sensor fault came at around the the same time as your glow plugs faults. That can be a bit more than a coincidence.

4) your injector deviation is a bit out of range

Group 004. Your cam torsion is -3.4. That might be too far out(certainly is for my comfort). I'd plug your sensors back in and see if that's still the value. If it's still -3.4. I'd make tiny adjustments and advance the cam to around 0 to 1.0. Even if that's not the issue, the car will run much better once the issue is solved.

https://youtu.be/pAEmqvUpKEY

It's an easy adjustment to make.

I'll work on fixing the fuel filter lid and setting my timing. And clearing all the data and retesting for values. Let me know what you find when you get a chance to take a look. Appreciate it!

Ok so got the timing dead on at 0.0 the first try. So that's neat. My injectors are at -.9, +2.99, -1.4, and -2.3. Only the 2nd injector at 2.99 isn't fluctuation. The other move maybe .05.

Note the engine has only been running a few minutes. Wasn't sure whether to drive it to warm it up as there's the issue of it running poorly.

Only engine DTCs through auto scan are the glow plugs, EGR, and new one for a misfire on cyl 2. Which tells me that injector is bad as it's also not fluctuating like the others.

If I'm wrong let me know. Open to ideas on what to check next.

Before assuming it's a bad injector, remove injection harness from the cylinder head and clean the connector. If that doesn't fix it, pull the valve cover and check the connections on the injector. You have known issues on the harness elsewhere, I'd rule that out 100 percent before replacing anything.

What's the actual DTC for the injector?

Don't remember the exact code. But I didn't get the electrical code as seen from your link, just the misfire code. Been freezing here and my car is an hr away, so I'll have to check my connections. Where is the injector harness connector located (not the individual injector connectors)?

There's a big round connector on the right side of the head near the tandem pump. No tools are needed to remove it, there's a tab to hit and it'll rotate off. If cleaning doesn't work, I'd pull the injector harness from under the valve cover and take it inside to test with a multimeter(check continuity and resistance). It's easy to remove the harness, there's two screws I think on the connector to the head, then unclip the connector to each injector and pull the harness out.

If the injector harness checks out, then it's likely an issue between the connector and the ECU, or the injector. You can inspect the cam while you have the valve cover off, never a bad thing to check on these cars.

Thought that was the glow plug connector...it's been a couple years so maybe I'm mixed up. I'll check it out.

The glowplug harness ties into the main harness. Unfortunately, the only way to disconnect the glow plug harness is by cutting it and splicing in a new one.

Edit: Here's a video for the removal.

Checked injector wiring. Doesn't seem to be any issues. I did notice that the first time I read the group 013 for injectors, that the 2nd and 4th both read about 3.0. However the second time the 4th was 1.5. I read them again while wiggling the harness and connectors to see if anything fluctuated, which it did not. However this 3rd time reading them the 4th was back at 2.99-3.0 and after idling for about 5 or so mins began dropping to about 2.8, however I didn't wait to see where it would end up.

So I'm going to go ahead and swap the 2nd cyl injector with a used one. I have a few questions on this. I've read up on it, but want to check a few things.

1) what size and grade are the hold down bolts (the smaller ones more prone to stretching)
2) do I need to rotate the engine with the wheels off the ground when setting the lash?
3) do I need to replace the injector oring, and if so what size(s) do I need?
4) is there anything else I need to replace or check while that one injector is out?

Ok so after a bit of research I learned that the torsion value will read 0.0 and a p0304? (Implausible signal from cam sensor) will show if the timing is too far out. So adjusted and I'm at +1.0.

From 1-4 my injectors read -1.6, 2.99, .5, and -3.01.
However they change as I'm driving. The last cyl will go to -1.8. The 1 and 3 move as well. Though number 2 never does.

Re set the lash and 1 and 3 are under 1.0. 2 and 4 show the values climb until they stop at 2- 2.99 and 4-3.01

No longer have a misfire code for cylinder 2 either.

Read Frank's simplified lash setting. I also use a dial gauge. I wanted to clarify that the injectors/spring are compressed when performing lash. Cyl 1,2,3,4 from cam belt side or passenger side to driver side. 1 and 2 cyl have ex lobes on the left side of injector roller and 3 and 4 have ex lobe on right side of roller.
