I am planning to buy 17 inch rims for my 2001 Vw golf gls tdi. What are the biggest size tires I can buy with these rims without having any problem. Could it be a 225 or 215.
Thank you

Not sure how much different a 215 will sit on a 17 than it does on my 15x6 rims, but I have 215/60R15 Yokohama AVID H4s and they rub slightly in the front when the wheel is locked. I have never felt or heard it rub but there are rub marks on my inner fender. It is very light rubbing. I would think that 225s would rub alot more, however the GLI runs 225s I believe so it must be possible...unless the GLI has different inner fender liners...

my 215/60 tires should technically stand 1/3 of an inch taller than the stock Michelins, however they actually sit almost exactly the same as the speedometer reads slightly fast still.

sorry I forgot to mention...I have Eibach Pro springs on my car, so it sits about 1.4 inches lower than stock. So with stock suspension they would fit fine im sure.

The stock wheel/tire combinations for VW's are as follows:

195/65/15 on 15" wheel
205/55/16 on 16" wheel
225/45/17 on 17" wheel
225/40/18 on 18" wheel

These wheel/tire combinations will result in an overall diamter that's basically unchanged. If you go to a smaller width, then the corresponding aspect ratio will change and so will the overall diamter. Do a Google search for "tire size calculator" and you should be able to find a site or 10,000 that will allow you to compare tire sizes according to their measurments and overall diameter.

By the way, I also have the Eibach Pro Kit springs and Bilstein TC's and am currently running 225/40/18 on 18" OZ Aristo's and have never experienced any rubbing of any kind. I had 17" Long Beach mags prior to these and they fit fine as well.

So it seems that 225s will fit on our cars just fine, unless you do like me and get a tire that is slightly taller as well. My tires stand 25.2 inches tall. My stock tires(195/65R15 Michelins) were 24.98 inches, and the 225/40R18s are 25.08 inches tall (calculated numbers). I tried to get as close to stock height as I could, but there isnt an exact match for the 215 width on 15 inch rims. Hopefully I can get some 17s in the spring and go up to 225/45R17s to get rid of some sidewall flex and get even more rubber on the ground.
