Hi, I got a 2000 TDI Jetta Automatic. Here is the short timing belt (TB) maintantence history.

. Have TB replaced at 40K using origital VM parts
. Have TB and Water Pump replaced using original VM parts by dealer.

Now I am approaching 120K. I am thinking to get 100K TB Kit from one of the following sources since they offer 100K TB kits.

Does anyone know if 100K TB is compatible with original 40K TB?
If it is, which website do you recommend?
How about Serpertine belt, can it last 100K?

Thanks

Yes, the 100k belt will work on your car.

The three sources you note all carry the coveted "preferred" status...no concerns there.

I'm lacking some of the parts on the TB kits until the end of the month, or else I'd be happy to help you out. I highly recommend going to www.tdiparts.com for the kit, or sending a PM to IndigoBlueWagon. He'll treat you well! If there is something else I can help you with though please let me know!
Cheers,

Because Jetta888 has an automatic trans the TB is good for 80k miles. Standard trans goes 100k miles.:) :)
That's not really true. A properly-installed extended-life TB with all the extras should be good for 100k miles, either manual or automatic.

TornadoRed the last I knew in 2003 VW recommended the 100k was for S/T and A/T were 80K for the same T/B. It is because the larger I/P piston 10mm vers. 11 mm causes more stress on the TB therefore shorter change cycle. Please explain where I am wrong. Thanks.:) :)

The official VW maintenance schedule for 2003 doesn't make a distinction between automatic and manual transmission as far as the timing belt change recommendation... 100,000 miles is the design parameter...

Of course, many of us believe that it's wise to consider changing it just a bit early... no matter what type of transmission... (I changed my second belt after 101,200 miles and didn't like the play in the lower small roller... the first (factory) belt's roller went very bad suddenly at 95,100 miles...)

I got mine form the palce in Texas. I have a 2001 auto. First 40k belt was done at the dealer(I had 100k warranty and NO dealer would install the 80k setup - I tried calling corporate as well).

Second belt at 80k was the TB kit with new tensioner, waterpump, etc. from a good TDI mechanic that I plan on running until 160k. At that time I'll have the TB done, determine whether to have someone service the auto tranny or attempt it myself. FYI My tranny came apart and literally broke the case at just over 60k - glad I had a 2001 - the last year with the 100k warranty.

If I remember correctly in 2001 auto's TB were 40k and manuals were 80k. The new tensioner, etc. really from the 2002's with the longer interval (80k for auto's) was what my parts were. I expect to do TB, perhaps tensioner, waterpump every 80k. I don't trust anything as critical as a TB past 80-100k in any car. TDI motors are expensive you know.

__. Dave, you're right about the 2002MY recommended change interval going out to 80K but for '03, VW changed the rollers and further extended the recommneded belt change to 100K (any transmission). If you do the "full 100K kit", any A4 (prior to the PD engine change in '04) can go to 100K.

__. And my golden rule is to change everything the belt touches (all rollers, idlers, tensioner, water pump, etc. -- except for the toothed wheels on the cam, crank and fuel pump).
