Interesting. I wonder why my batt box interfered...... Well, my car has been tapped on the front end twice.... maybe its shifted a bit, but everything else seems to be in the right spot. Delvi, can you snap a photo?

I would think that Vortexers would give some of these parts away as they install aftermarket intakes...anyone looked around or posted a WTB over there?

I don't think they have that those parts where only installed on the european R32 with DSG transmission. thats why they have to be ordered from europ.

I installed the snorkel, the piece under/behind the headlight today and I modified the US spec R32 air box that I had to make the snorkel fit, still have the stock TDI top of the airbox(I will change that soon)

I was able to keep the battery box without trimming:D

while the bumper was off I also installed the upgraded side mount intercooler;)
Why did the R32 airbox need to be modified? What did you modify?

Even if the snorkle ID is bigger, is everything in FRONT OF THE SNORKLE bigger as well? Doesn't the opening in the grill HAVE TO BE JUST AS LARGE?
It's a great mod, but can someone answer this question?
Thanks

The front grill intake doesn't change. But the shroud around the headlight has a larger hole/interface that matches the larger snorkle diameter.

If you look at this pic, it does look like the R32 shroud is larger.

The rear shroud isnt really larger, but rather it fits the the larger snorkle reciever that goes under the headlight.

Sorry to do this but bump:
So if I was using the R32 Euro DSG box (top and bottom) and snorkle, what would the MAF and accordion tube situation be? The stock is smaller than the air box outlet right?

Should/could one get an R32 MAF holder ect.? (Yes I know a mini remap would be needed)

I got a US spec R32 box for a manual transmission, and the hole was not the right size(the us r32 box has a smaller hole for the snorkel)

so I trimmed the opening and I had some gasket material and now is nice and tight:eek:

So, the piece pictured at the top in this photo is the piece that goes behind/below the headlight, and the piece on the lower left is the intake snorkle. But what is that piece on the lower right??

Delvi, did you order the airbox from 1stvw? and was it part # 1J0129607AK?
Thats the one I got and it all fit fine.

interesting. ETKA doesnt list the 1J0129607AK euro r32 airbox as a US available part, but 1stvwparts.com, which is a dealership, carries it....
It does however appear that the price has jumped to $122.15.....
So make sure you order via the part #s, and not just order a US r32 airbox.

Oh, I noticed. I just never bothered to check if the ---AK airbox was a us or euro only part. Its curious that its even available thru a US dealership parts counter.

Need an original Larger intake hole?

Don't you really need a larger opening to start with?

or am I missing something? How do you get better flow if the grill opening is the same size? Why do dragster's have roof scoops?

(still like the mod! :D)

I would tend to agree...

When I upgrade my SMIC, I am hoping to fab up some venting to direct more airflow across the box. Which will have a similar restriction as to what oEo is pointing out.

Thanks... Take a look at what "Devonutopia" has done with his car. He has a 'huge' scoop embedded in the front of his grill. We'll need him to post a photo!

Thanks

look at this thread on vortex, somebody mesured the air flow thru vagcom and they definitelly got more air with the MOD
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2647069&page=1

so it could be that with the stock(small) snorkel you were not using all the air that was comming in thru your grill holes.

Quick question: Is it just the bumper cover that has to come off to do this mod, or does the entire bumper need to be removed?
