No Comment needed. Good old China steel. Just hope to keep the VWs away from the American crap mobiles.

What did actually happen to cause the steering wheel to Fall Off while cruising on the Freeway?

From what I could see, it looked like the spline stripped .

None yet.
None required; thank you for validating my decision to never, ever buy a GM car again since my 1985 Pontiac 6000 lemon.
The folks have two GMs ('06 Sierra and '00 Jimmy) the Sierra has endless electrical issues, and the Jimmy is just a poorly built unreliable piece of garbage.

... None :S
It looks like the bolt was over torqued and snapped. The splines look ok, grandma could have probably stuck the wheel back on the shaft to control the car.

These owners have no idea how much money they could have come into if they had just had a *mild* accident instead of stopping before damage was done.

From what I read about it, it happened to the one car and GM gave them a new car. It was something about the wrong steering wheel was put on and when it was switched to the correct steering wheel the assembler either put the bolt on loose or not at all.

Going to purchase one
I already told myself I'd never by GM, yes... this is just more reassurance. Should GM for some odd reason be the only car maker out there... I'd rather ride a bike :)

Any gm or ford cars we get over here tend to be crap to be fair and the tdi's are nice to work on imo. My neighbour has a ford focus turbo diesel with about 60,000 miles on it, a 2005 model and it's on its second dmf, my tdi's a 2000 model on the original dmf and it's done 144,000 miles.:)

Not for nothing, but myy VW has been the least reliable car out of every car I've owned.. It hasn't been too bad, only left me on the side of the road with a bad turbo twice in 3 weeks, but I'm ALWAYS fixing something on it.. My Blazer I've pretty much just driven for the last 4 years and put minimal dollars into it.. The Jeep is always broken, the F150 I had wasn't bad, the cavalier I got at 180k and delivered pizza with it for another 180k and did nothing but change fluids/filters/tires and brakes.. I've pretty much owned GM's all my life and they have always treated me well.. I've only had one GM ever leave me on the side of the road..

The GM trucks have their common electrical problems (I think they come off the assembly line with bad instrument clusters), but the VW's are just as bad if not worse in the electrical department not to mention bad VNT actuators, failed turbos, clogged intakes, glass auto transmissions that cost 5k to replace, etc...

no they haven't... I have 2 99.5's, a 2001, a 2003, and a 2004. I own 13 cars, I don't put them all in my signature, only the fast one.. They improved slightly in only a few areas... The 03 has had more stupid things go wrong than every other vehicle I've ever owned...

Lets face it all cars/trucks can have issues from time to time. Lots of technology packed into them. Just saying. I always have a smile on my face when working/playing on/with the VWs.
