Default VW dealer oil requirements

What is the dealer required in using for the free maintenance intervals? One dealer only uses Castrol syntec 5W40 with the 505-00 rating from VW. Others say any oil they choose it fine!!! Has VW posted anything on this-must the dealers use a certain oil? The dealer's also disagree on intervals-some 15000 km as per manual others 7500 km. The free maintenance therefore must pay for whatever the dealer requires in oil changes right?

Check the FAQ and do a search in the oil and fuel section. There are VOLUMES on the subject.

PS

Fuel Economy: you keep track?

Castrol 5W40 is the prefered dealer supplied oil.

Don't mind Howard.

If the dealer uses the 5W40 it is a safe bet they are aware of someof the special needs of the TDI.

Once the free service is finished choose a good quality synthetic diesel oil for the rest of the life.

Stick with the factory interval. The US interval is 10k mile os 6 months. 15k kms would be perfect. The dealers saying 7500km just want your money. THere are lots of threads about this in the fuel and lube section and in the FAQ.

BTW Welcome

(nice to see another VW & Volvo owner)

The dealer's oil is OK for the interval from 5K to 10K. CF rated Syntec would probably also be "good enough" for the 10K change intervals, but if you want the best you should plan on bringing your own oil, starting at 10K. Use a full synthetic CG-4 or CH-4 rated oil, like Mobil DELVAC 1 (Not the regular Mobil 1), Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic (not the regular Delo 400) or Amsoil Series 3000.

Even if you insist on using the "free" oil for the first 20K you'll definitely save money buy avoiding the expensive "magic" Syntec later on. You can get the synthetic Delo for under $15 per gallon.

Clacker,

I'd go with the dealer with the 5w-40 syntec AND the 7500 km intervals - if they'll give it to you free under warranty!
