Yes you can, but no, you shouldn't. It is not vw507 approved. Not good for the emissions system.

There are no 5w-40 oils that meet 507. It must be 5w-30. Also, all 507 oils are sold in liters.

Pep Boys usually carries Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 which meets 507. It is like 12.00 per liter if you don't find a sale.

i found online near near me at ,pep boys Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 Delvac ESP Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil(GAL)

Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 Delvac ESP

Sulphated Ash, wt% (ASTM D874) 1.0

M1 ESP 5W40 FM

Sulphated Ash, wt% (ASTM D874) 0.6

From the above specs. avoid using Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 Delvac ESP since it has higher (40% more) SA content vs M1 ESP 5W40 FM lower SA content (40% less) . This will damage your DPF.

OP see the thread in my signature line. Makes it a bit easier. Just go to the 507 section.

M1 ESP 5W30 HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC (ASTM D4683) 3.58 (lower) vs

M1 ESP 5W40 FM HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC (ASTM D4683) 3.80 (higher)

If car is still /der warranty then use M1 ESP 5W30 otherwise M1 ESP 5W40 FM it's a better choice.

MB one of the grand daddys of the CR Diesel specifies M1 ESP 5W40 FM in all their CRD vehicles in NA.

Mobil Delvac 1/ESP actually has 67% higher ash than a typical VW 507.00 formulation:
(.4%/.6%)(100%) = 67%

Sorry to be picky but actually .6/.4 is 50% more so 5-40 FM is not 507.00!!! How soon we forget or are fooled. Toolslick and Bob you better clarify this.
Devlac 1 ESP 5w40 is CJ-4, 1% ash
Mobil 1 ESP FM 5w40 is 229.5, 0.6% ash
Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 is 507.00, 0.6% ash

(1/0.6) = 1.67

As shown above 1.67 = 167%, or 67% higher ash for the Mobil Delvac 1/ESP, or any other API/CJ-4 Spec diesel oil. If you were looking at it the other way (.4%/1.0%), you could also say that a VW 507.00 oil has 40% less ash - compared to an API/CJ-4 oil. The two statements convey the same exact data.

(This is why we need more math teachers and fewer lawyers). :-(

Yes, you caught me out. I jumped in to quick thinking you meant 507.00 was .4% ash and 5w-40 FM was .6% and the comparison was between those two oils. But in fact they both are .6%. Never mind you got me on that one. Rub it in.

An older, VW 502.00/505.00 oil can have up to 1.5% ash, although most come in a bit lower.

Just want to thank you guys!

I just moved into a 2009 Jetta TDI from a 2006 and the Devlac 1 ESP 5w40 was the oil of choice in my 2006 and I had EXCELLENT results with it and extended OCI's. Looks like I'll change it up to the Mobil 1 ESP FM 5w40 and see how that oil holds up.

Bob/TooSlick, can you give a quick "general" mileage folks are running on the CRD Jetta's? I'll search it out if you'd rather not but I think you have a captive audience in this thread that love the feedback and knowledge you possess and share with the club. :)

Thanks again!

Well most people are doing the 10k, but some UOAs show that it could go longer. You gotta remember that many CRs are still in warranty so sticking to the factory recommended OCIs is the safe thing to do.

Does anyone actually have any UOA data that would indicate a VW507 oil would not protect a tdi CR engine as well as a 5W40?

The 5w-30, VW 507.00 oils are working just fine. I've seen a few oil analyses, representing maybe 1%-2% of the vehicles, where the oil did not hold up for 10,000 miles. However this can only be helped by using a formulation with a higher starting TBN, ie more detergency. Using a thicker oil isn't going to address this issue.
