Sounds like this part may have failed:

However, there are other parts on top of the trans that can fail. I'd check the condition of the parts below the shifter boot as noted in the links above, then look at the levers and bushings on top of the transmission. They wear out and fail as well.

Once you confirm that these parts are all OK, or after you replace them, you can adjust the shifter linkage:

oh so I wouldn't want to adjust it first? someone told me today I to try a adjustment first. I didn't know if from the video maybe something was missing or broken

Well, you can certainly try adjusting it. If that doesn't fix it, I'd be looking for worn parts. They'll be obvious when you see them.

As Rem says, check things out first before committing to adjusting. Doesn't take much to do. You might find that you have cracked bushings, in which case adjusting is going to be futile.

Yup. The shifting in my 2000 Beetle is a rats nest...I haven't even tried to adjust the cables. I'm not driving the car now, so it's very low priority, but the shifting mechanisms do need a few parts replaced, on top of the trans, and below the shifter in the car.

I find VW transmissions to be oil sensitive.
From my experience with mine, once the 1-2 shift gets notchy or grinds, if I change the gear oil it solves the issue

sorry yea the video was set to private but its good now. I did change my tranny oil about a year ago. got the best redline oil transmission fluid and didn't have any problems when I changed it. also there is NO GRINDING at all. just cant find the gears

Are the shift linkage arms, shifter or counter weight bumping or rubbing against anything? In your video I noticed the flex tubing might have enough slack in it to interfere with shifting. I recently put a starter in my MK5 and installed the positive cable on the solenoid incorrectly (12 o'clock v. 9 o'clock), which prevented me from shifting into reverse. Maybe check the engine compartment for rogue parts as somebody tries to shift it through gears.

Follow and read the links I posted for you above last week. In your video this part in the shifter assembly looks like it is completely disintegrated...

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=4516452&postcount=21

If that part fails, you will lose the ability to get into 1st and 2nd gear. I don't know about reverse, but it would likely become difficult as well. Read that thread, and then look at that part in your shifter.

Repair part available here...

I'd also buy the alignment pin, and then calibrate the shifter cables once the new FGG part is installed.

Looks like that is to me too. Easy to fix with the dieselgeek part.

Yeah...I think he's not seeing any cracked or broken pieces because the part has disintegrated so badly it's not even there anymore. If you watch closely, you can see the slop between that pin in the lever.
