Cam and lifters....I'm feeling a bit newbish today

I'm changing the timing belt on one of my bew's today, last time I did this I didn't pull the valve cover to inspect the cam and lifters. I'm at 248,000 miles on this car and it would probably be wise to inspect it this time.

Anything I should know before pulling the cam? Is there a great diy laying around?

There is a neat trick where you can rotate the engine 90 degrees past TDC in order to have the drive slot in the tandem pump be verticle and this allows you to lift the camshaft out without having to remove the tandem pump. Even though this "how to" states its for the Passat, you can use it for the BEW.

Wow, super helpful that video, my car sounds nothing like that, makes me feel more comfortable...I just realized that I don't have new head bolts to put in...probably going to just use the camera to do a zoomed in inspection of everything.
