Ok I've had the rental car for a while now and know it's mileage fairly well.
The rental car is a Toyota Corolla. Basic rental car no frills and no comfort.
It's getting 25.1 mpg avg so far. I haven't been on the freeway much for long runs, but I'd say about 1/3 of my use thus far is freeway. It runs like a sewing machine, engine is silent and smooth. Trans is a bit of a struggle to get used to after the DSG. Slow as a mule. Scary getting onto the freeway.
The car is the same size as my Jetta more or less. That's all the comparison that can be made.
Can't wait to get the VW back!
