I recently purchased a 2002 ALH motor (127k) from a beetle. It is going to be going into a 1986 Suzuki samurai. It did not include the Harness and Ecu. Can I Start with any harness and Ecu from any year ALH motor. I know the Ecu must be tuned and harness simplified. I just need to be sure not to make any purchase mistakes. I read through this forum but did not find a definite answer. thanks in advance and also got alot of information by what i read so far.

you can use any ALH harness, a few things to consider, only 2000-2003 121 pin is port flashable (all these y2k-03' require immobilizer delete), 2003 would require changing your #3 injector to the rounded plug or swapping the harness connector, 2000-2001 may be easier to pull a tach signal, cel, and glow indicators directly from existing wires .... you could also go older older 98-99.5, 80 pin but they require ecm socketing... or even older ahu/1z 68 pin would work if you repinned the IP harness to an mkiv headlight connector, but again these older ecm's are not obd2 flashable

Just to expand jimbote's post - there are three flavors of the ALH

97-99 with the 80 pin ECU
00-01 with 121 pin ECU and "two wire" glow plug
02-03 with 121 pin ECU and "four wire" glow plug

Unless you never want to change software, don't do the 80 pin ECUs

All 00-03 ECUs will plug into all 00-03 harnesses, however it you can't us a 00/01 ECU on a 02/03 harness (or vice versa) and expect the glow plug relay to be happy.

I have a few ALH ECUs and harnesses in stock and can do a custom harness and software for you if you are interested in going that route.
