Power steering system purge? or just the resevoir?

I did a search but came up empty handed..

I'm wondering if it is sufficient to change the PS fluid volume of the resevoir ONLY or to attempt to purge the system?

I figure just replacing the volume of the resevoir is sufficient but wanted your guys opinions..

I've got my 1L bottle of Pentosin 11S ready!

The reservoir actually doesn't contain that much fluid. The majority of it is in the hoses, pump and rack. You could do a "little at the time" flush. Use a mityvac to drain the reservoir as much as possible, fill with fluid, run engine, turn wheels to stops. Then repeat. Do it until you've used most or all of the fluid.

May I ask why you're purging the system? Are you having PS problems?

No major reason other than doing a bit of preventative maint.

So I guess it would be a bad idea to "bleed the system" then bring it back to normal?

Using the method you described, should I use a whole liter in doing it?

Thanks!

I siphoned out my reservior, measured it, and came up with 500ml exactly. One-half of a Pentosin can so have enough do it again someday. Like changing the ATF, it isn't all of it, but a percentage of new fluid can't hurt.
