I had a discussion with a co-worker about TDI's and longevity. His position was our cars will last no longer then any of the big three cars. I remember reading here a post about a properly maintained TDI will last almost indefinitely. I know there is a lot a members out there with mega miles on their cars. Anyhow I would like to hear about your car's high mileage.

Please chime in with your high mileage and the year of car!

Your friend is misinformed.

At the fest there was one car with 350K or so on it and it was mint. there were many many others with 250K+

I only have 188,888 but it is going strong! Weekend before last I drove 450 miles and got 50.5 MPG. With about 20% city driving.

I don't know of many NEW big 3 cars I would trade my just broken in 115k mile TDI for. Theres a reason why I stoped buying those things and find the long term livability of my VWs to be pretty damn good.

Ask your friend to look at Kelly Blue Book and compare a 5 year old TDI to a 5 year old "fill in the blank with another similar sized vehicle". He will be quite surprised as to how the TDI's hold their value, typically holding more then twice that of the big three

I can tell you no car lasts "indefinitely". Mechanical devices wear out. OTOH, your friend has been hanging around the Detroit sleds for a little too long. Many here can and will disprove his premise. Take K5ING for example:

These darn VW's are lemons. Only a quarter-million miles and it won't even stand up to a truck and a mountain.

Glad to hear that you're all right, and it wasn't the car's fault.

He is the poster boy for TDi hi-mileage and there are quite a few not far behind him. He has practiced "basic" maintenance, on time. his car has served him without any major flaw/failure.

A maintained TDi WILL go the distance. Get your facts straight.

A car that receives marginal maintenance or no maintenance will be your greatest headache. There's just no magic or mystery when it comes to tending a diesel auto.

mine is an '01 Jetta TDI, with 244,000km. I'm just replacing the clutch since the original one is a bit worn and won't keep up with the mods
Original engine, turbo, trans, exhaust, struts. Car still rides solid with no windnoises or rattles. I haven't seen a comparable car from the "big 3". I've been looking for a late '90s Jetta diesel... $5000+ in decent shape. Or I could have had a '98 Ford Contour V6 for $800... hmmm. (still looking for another diesel)

Not too long ago I had the pleasure to service a 96 Passat TDI just at 325K miles. The engine, clutch, inj.pump, alternator are all orignal.
I did the TB, struts & brakes and cleaned the intake and replaced the voltage regulator. The only issues were the ever-on-going Passat haunts...window regulators, latches, locks and sun-roof headaches.

However this Passat runs strong and is a daily long distance escort vehicle. The only current issue is a throw-out bearing is starting to make a little noise.

My A-3 Jetta has 200K miles (my daily driver) runs strong and handles like new. My fuel mileage as of today is 52.4 MPG

I have two well-broken in TDIs

Wife's: (Green)
2000 Jetta GLS TDI 5-Speed - EGR-mod, nothing else...165K miles and counting

Mine: (Blue)
2000 Jetta GLS TDI Auto - EGR-Mod, Auto Pump, .187 injectors, RC Stage II, 304K Miles and counting (though this is the 2nd engine as I bought it dead after the dealer botched a TB job at 301K miles, so it has 20K miles on this motor...
)

and then of course there's my daughter's VW...electric 2004 NB

Loving them all

There no question about his level of knowledge being a big fat zero. He was raised in a B-3 factory family with those family discounts and so called perks.

I have been asked by lots people who I work with about my TDI cars and this guy keeps running them down infront of those who objectiviely are listening and learning about TDI's. His main point was TDI cars couldn't go the distance. I got some more high mileage quotes for him now. Thanks

I like this thread because forums so often seem to concentrate people's problems. Everyone posts to solve their problem so a casual reader (lurker) gets all the bad news.

Hope you high milers will keep regaling us with your longevity chronicles so we know what we have to look forward to!!

Have 306000 kms., car very solid, and still fun to drive, but sigh, to be honest, have spent quite a sum on a multitude of repairs. (99.5 Golf). Seems to be finally running pretty well, though, so plan to see just how many kms. I can afford.

I have 175K on my 98 Beetle and with the help of these Forums I've changed the timing belt twice by myself, cleaned the intake manifold, and changed the struts and shocks. It is running better now than when I bought it with 70K. I get 46 MPG, 99% highway, @75MPH. My wife gave me heck when I bought it, now she has a 2005 PD Jetta and she loves it.

I agree.

I remember a guy I met back in 01 who had a golf TDI exactly like my old golf. He was courier for a bank and had 88k on his golf in less then one year.
I'm sitting here thinking I should try to hang on to my car lots longer then I have in past. We have had 5 TDI's since 2000. Never had any a major problem with any of them. I just like the new ones too much.(yep, I know...poor reason.)
I put about 25 to 30k a year on each car and was trading them in then the warranty ran out from the miles. If I kept my 01 I would have had about 150 to 200k on it by now.
Keep em rolling folks, let’s see who got the highest miles out there.

I don't personally know about the longevity of the TDI's...

Today is the 2-1/2 year anniversary of our 2003 Jetta Wagon... 229819 km (142803 miles) [we picked it up with 6 km on it...] - I just replaced the rear brakes for the first time... still had lining on the pads...

Our previous 2 Jetta Turbo Diesels (Indirect Injection), however, only lasted about 435000 miles each... (darned Quebec road conditions and salt...)

Oh, yes... the fuel economy and driving range... I forgot about that...

Just wanted to check in here and say that my 2001 Golf TDI is still running and driving pretty much like new, even with over 254,000 miles on it.

Original everything, except for maintaince items. Suspension and even front brakes are still good. Only smokes a little bit when I'm really getting on it, which I rarely do.

They kind of remind me of the old Tootsi-Pop commercial:

"How long does it take to wear out a TDI?"

"The world may never know"

2000 Jetta tdi with 155,000 miles. At this point everything is still original (except maintenance, tb, brakes etc.), also a 98 Jetta tdi 125,000 miles with the turbo the only failure. Turbo was fine, but the wastegate actuator was dead.

All I can say is maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. If you want them to live take care of them.

There are just too many to list....
I service several TDIs regularly with over 300k on them. The older A3's body gets a little loose over time, but the later A4s seem to hold up better. All the engines are 100% perfect.

This post make me very happy!

as I am currently the owner of a 2002 GTI 337 and as I'm almost paying off the car I am seaching for the next ride....

actually I want 2 cars a fun yet effiecient MKIV golf and a 2002 Lotus Elise

I figure with the 337 paid off next year I can sell if for ~$10,000 as it is in great shape! actually its MINT! w/ 60K right now.

I'm hoping to get into a '01-'02 Golf TDI @ ~70-80K do a couple suspension and fun mods and standard maitainence and have that as my daily.

Then start saving up for the Lotus maybe by 2007 I can have both

Thanks so much for this forum and its insight into the TDI

Not a TDI-- but my 89 Diesel Jetta 1.6L went 623,000 on it's original, unrebuilt engine. Never had the head off or any major engine work. 90% highway or 50mph plus driving on a sales route. 5th gear wore out at 420,000 so I replaced the transaxle with a used one. It still got 40 plus MPG as careful records were kept.
My current 03 has 110,000 on it and should last another 400,000 plus miles.
(Edit) Oh, for what it's worth.. the 89 didn't die of natural causes. It met a buick in an intersection and was totaled by the insurance company. The next day, I bought the 2003.
