I was reading the guide on how to change the timing belt on the mk4 tdi that can be found under maintenance (http://www.tdiclub.com/articles/pdf/a4timingbelt.pdf) , and on page 118 it says that to advance the injection, the pump has to be turned anticlockwise. If i am not mistaken, it should be the opposite. As far as i can remember, once the 3 13mm nuts have been loosened, the 22mm centre nut can be turned slightly clockwise to advance the injection and counterclockwise to retard the injection.
Of course all of this is considering that the person is facing the pulleys and the front of the car is closer to the right hand.
I hope this helps, and if anyone can confirm this would be good too.
