I am down an average of 5 or 6 mpg since October (from about 55 to about 49). Is this normal because of the winter blend?

The colder ambient temps at startup don't do your mileage any favors either...

On a long trip where the engine only has to warm up once, my guess is the difference would not be quite so bad.

The BTU drop between straight #2 and winter fuel depends on how much #1 they put in to keep the gel point above what you're likely to encounter in your neck of the woods.
