Need Some Instrument Cluster Help

Everything the previous owner of my car touched, he hacked. I just removed my cluster to remove the black foam he glued over the check engine light and in the process discovered this wiring hack.



The next picture is just the back side of the cluster.



The blue plug plugs into the orange socket.

The PO claimed that the cluster failed and that he had a dealer replace it. I don't know if that helps or not, but I am wondering if someone can tell me if this blue connector with the 1 wire is what should actually be there. The cluster works as it should.

On my diesel MK3 cluster back in the day yup, there was one lonely wire on the second plug.

OK, I guess the PO must have hacked that wire and then fixed it or something. I got it all put back together and even fixed my CEL issue, so as far as this issue goes, all is well.
