Ok, I know it is ridiculously early for this, but I decided to anyway (thanks steve for the tip!)

Shrifty,

Never too early! For Passat owners, what group did you locate the data. Perhaps this info can be added to he first post to help them locate this info.

Current soot load: Group 241 - Field 1 Soot Load(g) - Calculated 12.3
Group 241 - Field 2 Soot Load(g) - Measured 0.0

I noticed that my Oil Ash Volume jumper from 39 to 48ml last month at 56k miles. I can monitor the ash volume in my MFD via the Polar FIS module. I hope that I can accurately capture the "exact" mileage that it changes. Assume that the next reading will be 57ml as it appears to jump in 9ml increments.

I found it by clicking on the Advanced Measuring Block Menu instead of 08 Measuring Blocks.

mpg dropped after swapping tires & adding the neuspeed turbo discharge dampner, need to enter latest receipts to the spread sheet. I will update the mpg when I get home

FWIW, adding 2SO to the fuel... tracking that data here... http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=393746

I have been watching this post recently and decided to throw in my two cents. When I bought my 2009 the factory called for oil every 10K. The dealers like to push 5k as their "recommended" interval for oil changes. I wonder if they were selling us fresh batches of Ash without realizing it? It seems to me that the concentration of the natural ash in the oil would reduce to oa lower level over 10k rather than 5k miles.

Additional vagcom (version 12.12.0) data points:

6.3 g Soot (meas)

19.2 l Fuel consumption since last regen

Comments:
Fuel additives: Since around 30k miles, 1 quart of BioD per tankful (==> approx. B2) plus a mix of Power Service white and grey.

Oil change interval: was every 10K up to 80K miles, then reduced to every 7500 after a used oil analysis recommended it due to detergent levels being low.

Wish I'd known of this thread years ago -- whoops!

Had car at dealer recently for possible bearing/tire issue (speed-correlated noise(s)). Unrelated to this, the tech told me I had a fault, but there was not a CEL -- EGR insufficient air flow (I found P0401, using vagcom). He said my ash load was 117 (and that the limit was 125 which scared the hell out of me; seems he may have been wrong on this). This was 130 miles ago, and my ash load has gone up 20 ml...?!?!? I'm questioning if the number he gave me was correct. But him mentioning this is what led me to find this thread.

This P0401 has only happened once, ~200 miles ago at 108343 (engine speed 2000 rpm and 62 mph, per freeze frame data) -- coincidentally just 70 miles before it was at the dealer. He said a clogging DPF can cause this fault.

I guess I may be at a wait-and-see point, and try to check the DPF data (and possible faults) regularly. I'm considering taking the car out and performing the Ross-Tech procedure to manually initiate a regen. Also wondering if perhaps a clogging EGR filter might explain the fault and/or relatively high ash load for my mileage. I did have a leak/crack in my upper EGR pipe (not too far from oil filter) 5 months ago, but probably put < 100 miles on the car with that issue before it was replaced. Don't know if or how that might affect the EGR filter.

SCARY REPLACEMENT COSTS: I've got a 2009, so the DPF and catalyst are one unit, which would be swapped out with the newer style of having them separate, and separately replaceable in the future. He quoted me $5350 to have it done!!!! :(

Comments/thoughts/advice welcomed and encouraged!

2010 Jetta Sportwagen DSG - Sold back to VW. Replaced with Sportwagen 2.5 GAS
Just got my VAGCOM today. This thing is awesome. $249 well spent.

OK.

November 2010 Jetta Sportwagen - Bought it in January 2013 with 23000miles.

Transmission DSG

Milage - 40050 miles. - Getting ready for DSG service (will be done by myself).
Ash Load - 39 ml.

Engine oil used - Castrol LL03.

Average Fuel Consumption since May 2013 - 43 mpg

Looks like I should be OK until 175000miles. It is roughly 1ml per 1000 miles.

has anyone ever used powermax Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaning.

http://www.dpfproblems.eu/index.html

had mine DPF replaced at 88,000 miles and called VW main office and got them cover all of the costs. At 130,000 now and wondering if anyone ever used powermax.
This is the data collection thread, not the discussion thread. That product deals with soot and not the ash being discussed here. Start another thread or move to the discussion thread.

Planning to give the front page a facelift. Updates from VAGCOM, Passat specific info, and maybe track DPF failures/replacements. I'm using version 12.12 from Ross-Tech. I believe that is the most current version. Anything specific to the newer cars?

For all you Passat owners (i'm jealous), if there is anything specific to your cars that would be helpful to have on the front page, let me know. Measuring blocks?, etc. that pertain to DPF, oil ash, and so on. Don't post it, just send me a PM. Any suggestions from all of you, I'm all ears. PM me and I'll make the "facelift". I'll admit I'm not the most active member, but I think this ended up being a good thread. The data is interesting and hopefully helpful.

Appreciate all your posts and your continued interest in the DPF dilemma.

It almost appears that your time is up on the DPF, hopefully it won't be expensive to replace. When I hit 150, it went up very quickly from there.

Finally turned from 129 ml to 138 ml. Closer to DPF death...
Seriously looking at Rawtek or DieselDubs aftermarket exhaust. Going to switch to Mobile 1 from here on out.

Well we're gonna find out. Reportedly there is someone with 240k miles on a dpf, truth may vary. I have the '11 with seperated components so I'm expecting a bill of about $1400.

OK, FINALLY, wifes car was due for an oil change, switched from dealer oil over to Royal Purple HPS 5w-30. She has also started adding 2 stroke oil when filling up as of a week ago so it will be interesting to see what her ash levels are moving forward. I mix 6oz of 2SO & 6oz of PSD white.

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but has there been any conclusions drawn on this data yet? At first glance it would appear that the higher-mileage cars have higher O/A volumes than lower mileage cars, which makes sense since those engines likely have higher piston-ring / cylinder wear and associated blow-by, no?

It would also be interesting to see if there is some sort of correlation between oil brands and O/A content... Obviously most of the samples are from those using the factory LL03, so the sample field will be slightly weighted; but maybe the OP could run a quick query to see what the average content is per brand. Not trying to start anything here, just curious.
