which cylinder head gasket?

Ok, so now that I know that there are 3 different types of head gaskets for my car. and the easiest way to figure out which one to use is look at the old gasket. I really really really wish i hadn't chucked it in the garbage when i tore the motor down. So neither I or the machine shop that did the head rebuild have been able to figure out which one to order. I went to the local VW dealer with the car VIN # and all they want to do is sell me the thickest one to gaurantee valve clearance. is there any other way to figure out which gasket to use? or do i need to strongarm them into doing there(VW dealer) job and put down the coffee to do a little research.

any advice would be great,

disregard. I just needed to dig a little deeper into bentley on how to measure piston projecton to figure out proper thickness. you think they would have put that info in the cylinder head and valvetrain section.
