ya know this prolly ain't fair a'tall but since the wife and i drive for a living.....since aug 31 we have driven 31,000 miles in the work truck. last month we avg 17.58 mpg up from the month before of 15.56. amazing what slowing down will do in a large refrigerator.(e-250) nary a work mile since nov 23 but 1000 personal miles in the 10 days following that date.

What is up with the Diesel in Canada, more expensive than the US stuff?

It is BEAUTIFUL not to have to stop for fuel, I love it!
(2-B4 Variant owner, and a Citroen 1.9 n/a, wish it had some boost in it...)
Yeah, if I ever get back to Canada (will need a passport first, doh) I'll be sure to time it so I don't have to buy there, or buy as little as possible there. My last trip to Toronto was that way; filled up in the states and drove all the way up there, then came back before it was empty. That had to save me a few greenbacks!

Greg in Austin...
You have an extra fuel filter with you,
checked out tires(could be plenty of ice on the roads specially @ night),
got a set of wire cables for traction w/you,
got desire to drink good local microbrew's,
lots of time to take PICS?

Good luck, you'll be going by my area.
Careful with the unseen black ice, inc. late afternoons and early mornings.
What route you taking?

"Ave a good trip, that is a lot of miles...

1. Does it have to be fun?
oh yeah very fun!

2. What IS the magic number of mileage to call it a trip?
total mileage: approx. 20,000 km or 12,000 mi. sub total of 19,000 km or 11,800 miles from moncton new brunswick (that's in east coast canada) down to santa barbara, back up to the rockies, jasper/banff... and back. i actually started a smaller loop from halifax nova scotia (even farther east in canada) up to new waterford cape breton nova scotia (one of the farthest north points of NS). took 39 days + 3 for the cape breton loop. 6 weeks time to drive a year's worth of mileage!

3. Are we driving to "Break in" the new TDI?
what? from what i understand what the question is asking, nope the tdi already has 270,000 km on it if i remember correctly

4. Do we have to get away from the "significant other" to call it a "road trip", or do they have to come to call it, a "road trip"?
it was more of a get away

5. Does overnight mean a "road trip"?
yeah... well it took more than a month!

6. Is the making of memories entitle us to the "road trip" label?
oh yeah!

7. NO breakdowns, means a good "road trip"?
hmm, a breakdown completes the road trip! alternator pulley fell off, common problems. got stuck at a 24 hour truck stop for 24 hours. there's a junk yard and a garage right across! got a junk alternator for $60 and changed it at the garage. woulda changed the alternator myself but i don't have any tools. the guy is nice enough too so what the hell...

8. Driving a TDI exclusively IS necessary for the label of a "road trip"?
sure

9. Navigating in the USA, is it the only geographic area for it to be a
"road trip"?
half the time i have no idea what i am being asked. i would say no, i drove in both canada and the states.

oh btw, there is absolutely no reason why my roommates and i went on this trip, we just felt like it and we drove to california! they are doing it again this summer, but i have classes!

Very cool,

:D Wai, way to go!
Seems that you, so far, have the best-test road trip !

Gosh, I do remember them days of pointless but GREAT trips to no-where, where the fact of doing the trip was worth it ALL.

 !

No specific route, but Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone will be on the agenda.

Thinking a loop into Canada above Michigan and Minnesota might be fun.

My wife and I drove out to see dad for Father's Day. He lives in Rio Rancho, NM, suburb of Albuquerque. We live just outside of Fort Worth, so it's about 625 miles, give or take.

We filled up before leaving and drove straight through without having to stop a single time. We filled up while we were there and then topped off before heading back home. We spent less than a hundred bucks total.

With the money we saved from driving the Jetta TDI instead of the truck or even her Jeep, she was able to buy a few bottles of New Mexico wine at the Albuquerque Wine Festival. A good trade off to keep everyone happy!

Demrick: Got to go to Microbreweries along the route, you will be surprised of the wines they carry.

North of the border(Colorado/NM border), there is a lot to drive, with a TDI it is wonderful with the ease of the TDI motor...

I just did central Mississippi to LA and back over two weeks, for my mother's birthday.

The load that filled the trunk and entire back seat was a perfect example of the difference between men and women who travel. For two weeks, she had an entire rack of clothes on hangers, three bags, a medicine bag, three bags of snacks, drinks, magazines and an entire big bag of toiletries, including a handheld shower thingy, which I, without fussing, wrenched onto every shower pipe in every hotel.

I had a duffel bag.

Leaving for the pocono mountains in northeast PA this friday for a music festival, 250 miles down, we're taking the JSW (obviously) and will be posting on fuelly if I can figure out how to integrate it onto my sig. Shooting for 42-45 MPG round trip average! And just ordered a 'yes it's a diesel' TDI plate, hope it gets here soon!!

I am glad that someone else mentioned the differences in items and VOLUME of what is carried by the different sexes!

LOL

Over the summer I went on vacation with my girl, we went from central Illinois to the Bad Lands, Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Crater of the Moon, northern California redwoods, down the coast of California to San Fan, LA, Giant Sequoias National Park, Death Valley, Vegas, 4 Corners, we were tired by this point so back to Illinois. 6200 miles in 13 days. It was allot of fun got to see allot and very glad I had the good old B4 Passat TDI. Got around 45 mpg the hole trip, that was with the car loaded pretty well and the A/C on.

jpv: Corn fields, is that where the genetically modified high fructose corn syrup comes from, hmm?
There are a LOT of corn fields to supply the demand from the manufacturers of cereals(just to mane one industry), to fill their need !%@!
(ouch, my stomach is hurting already...)

Must have been a great trip, you got any pics. ?

Not so new to the forum, but not much of a poster. So forgive me for my old trips in my 2009 Jetta 4 door TDI.

July 2009-NY to Florida and back, 2700 miles with some running around I averaged 43.2 mpg. This was with a full trunk, 4 people, doing 70-75 with a/c on most of way. Though after my trip to DC, I think this may be higher, for I used the onboard mpg reader.

Went to Washington, DC 2nd week of Sept. Topped off tank, left home with 2.2 miles on trip odometer. With about 75 miles driving around the DC area, I went back and forth to NY with 100 miles left on my distance to empty reader.

Correct me if I am wrong,so here goes. My on board computer was reading 43.7 mpg doing 70-72 on I-95, along with the local driving. With 100 miles left, I estimated a little over 2 gallons left in the tank using the 43.7. With close to 640 miles on the odometer, my wife calculated 48.17 mpg.

So much for using the onboard mpg computer.. :)

I usually travel the same way. Does your wife also have 3 closets of "nothing to wear" like mine? :D

LOL no the trip was with my mother. I don't think I could marry a woman who travels with more crap than I do. (Maybe that's why I'm still single. :D)
