A wheel bearing isn't TDI specific. Just look for a reputable indy VW/Audi shop. Google is your friend. Just my 2¢...

howdy, new member here in south eastern New England (Eastford CT) looking for a guru to do a timing belt and give my 99.5 ALH a once over since I'm just about to turn over 250K. I have been driving this car for almost a year and can't really fathom switching back to a gasser anytime soon as long as I can keep this thing on the road.

Disclaimer and suggestions for finding a mechanic for your car:

TDIClub is not responsible for the quality of work performed by a mechanic on this list. This list is a compilation of recommendations from other users. Due to the large quantity of shadetree and professional mechanics in our community, we cannot verify the accuracy of all information contained in the list. Skill level varies widely and the onus is on the end user to do his or her homework to determine whether a particular recommended mechanic is qualified to complete said work properly. Finally, be sure to get warranty claims in writing!

A member considering a mechanic on the list should search throughout TDIClub and elsewhere on the Internet for all the information he can find.
Then the prospective customer should thoroughly question the mechanic regarding his equipment, techniques, and the parts he uses. Here is where it's important for the customer to be educated and informed, so he will be able to recognize BS answers when he hears them.

Only works on VWs

Knew exactly by listening before he put on computer that I had a cracked exhaust line, affecting turbo.

LOCAL dealership wanted over $2000 for new turbo, and of course it would not have fixed problem.

Also checked bearings and bolted new sway bar bolt on my 330K alh 5 speed with rocketchip stage 2 and mid ranged taller 5 gear.

These guy are excellent..

Total cost: <$180.

Just got an email from Bens Vdub shop in Madison Wi. they are reorganizing their emails. they are not taking any new customers till June/July via email. they are trying to get caught up on older projects and are concentrating on getting those done.
they no longer are taking phone calls or have counter hours. strictly by email.

I can't more highly recommend Mike and his work. I've been around vehicles for decades, worked in Heavy Equipment shops, known a lot of Mechanics, and can do just about anything on anything that moves but at my age, choose to not get under cars as much as I used to! Mike is very, very good... a TDI specialist... but more important, he is a fair-and-square guy. His work is efficient and his prices are reasonable. He explains what he did, keeps the old parts, and only charges for the work he DID, not the work he can "get away with billing", like so many other shops. Contact me on the side for more details.
I agree, Mike is the best.

If the website and email doesn't work, it should be removed from the listing and leave just the phone number...

it's also 2018, and many, many people prefer to communicate electronically so it can be a pretty big loss of business to be only reachable via telephone.

Hi, new member here looking for a trusted mechanic in the Pittsburgh area to replace a timing belt on my '09 MKV.
I see that F&P Auto is on the list but looks like they were added back in 2006... Has anybody used this mechanic recently? Would you recommend them?

Thanks in advance

I have been having Roman Golden work on my A4 BEW for the past three years.
My cars at 255K miles and I would have given up on it were it not for him.
I've worked with other listed "trusted mechanics" with varying success.

need Guru for timing belt job, Albany NY area...

Hi

Longtime member but inactive for years, apologies if this is the wrong place to ask, please refer me to better forum? I have a 2003 4dr tdi Golf with 198K,...My water pump is shot, so needs that and time for timing belt job. From various threads here I am worried that the mechanic I took it (who has been good, generally, but not a VW specialist) would mess up the job.. and that the dealers area rip-off?

Went through the Guru list and saw nothing within 2.5 hrs of me (Troy, NY). Anybody know a good mechanic/ guru who could do this job for me? Water pump leaking so bad now, I'm afraid to even drive it back and forth to work..

thanks,

Rich

If you cannot find a TDI guru, then talk to the folks who run VW/Audi shops. They should know how to change a timing belt, but find out what they usually advise regarding parts that should be replaced at the same time. If they only replace the t-belt, or maybe the water pump, then cross them off the list. If they replace everything in the timing belt path -- tensioner, roller/idlers -- that's good. If they use a standard kit, that's good. If they quote prices for each individual part, you'll end up paying too much. Mention the deluxe timing belt kits from IDParts (close to you), Dieselgeek (my personal choice), or Marquette Automotive (https://www.metalmanparts.com/product.sc?productId=1&categoryId=1) in PA.

¡¡¡¡¡P.S.A. FOR TEXAS!!!!!

Hey guys, i've gone through some of the postings of the past. And it seems nobody has mentioned, that Das European has moved, in June/July 2016.

Thought I would bring others up to date.

The shop is in full swing. It's a newer, LARGER, and with easier access.

THE OLD SHOP was off Kuykendahl, just south of Kroger, and across from CVS(I don't remember what it used to be, before CVS[i was still new to Houston]). If you went there, you had to fight for parking. Or block one of the neighboring shops, just to step out of you car. Let alone, get someone to look under the hood. Used to have 4 car lifts, and a thousand cars parked in the back lot. It was ballet to watch them get a car out, that had been sitting for a while buried in the lot.

TODAY: 4519 Spring Cypress Rd, Spring, TX 77388
https://daseuropeanautohaus.com

Just east of the new DPS, on Spring Cypress, and west of Spring Guns & Ammo.

They are not sharing a parking lot with other shops, it's all them. TONS of parking, inside the gates, and outside the gates. 9 lifts, plus an alignment lift/rack/machine. A REAL SIZED RESTROOM(not a broom closet), and a great crew. I recommend going for a tour.

Again, just trying to put it out there for everyone.

Awesome TDI guy in Wareham,MA

Just took my 2011 TDI Sportwagen to Chris Zanis of Schnell Snail in Wareham,MA (just off Cape Cod). Great guy, absolutely knows what he’s doing. Very informative and detail-oriented. And reasonably priced. I learned some really helpful stuff about my Jetta from him. Specifically, just how important it is to keep up with cleaning out my intercooler. Seems that pipe can fill up with sludge and cause serious problems in colder weather. Something most dealers service depts.dont pay attention to but Chris checked it without my asking and then educated me through the photos he took even though I’m not local to him and i might never even get back there!

Hello,
I highly recommend Roman in Hatboro PA, he shows me what was wrong within the car each time. He explains what he did and he always leaves the car better than it came in. Taking the car again to him in early November!

Hi all,

This is a long overdue recommendation for Lance Allen, operating Mohawk Auto Works in Emory, Texas.

Lance worked full time for and studied under Robby Plenge (one of the greatest TDI gurus) in Austin, Texas for many, many years. He's been located in Emory, TX about an hour east of Dallas, for several years now and operating his own shop.

I have over 570,000 miles on my '03 TDI now, and Lance has taken care of the repairs and scheduled maintenance on my car exclusively since he opened his shop, and jointly with Robby since 2007. Lance has done timing belts, radiator and AC repairs (damn that coyote!), brakes, shocks, turbos, injection pump (at 500k), you name, other mechanical issues too numerous to list.

Lance not only knows the true details of TDI repair, he is meticulously careful about everything from cleanliness to correct torque settings. He has shown himself to be scrupulously honest in everything he does. And he's out a bit in the country, so his prices have to be reasonable and fair, which they are.

I trust Lance so much that even for an ordinary brake job (my second) I drove the 200 miles up to his shop from Austin earlier this summer rather than having the work done locally.

LOL, I know this sounds like some paid internet recommendation, but it's not, I've been on this forum for many years, and I've become pretty knowledgeable on TDI's, do all the minor work myself, so I'm in a position to make a judgment.

You won't regret.

I have not had actual mechanical work performed at AARodriguez Corp but I have watched many of the repair videos that he has put out and used several of his aftermarket products that they produce with great success. All of my part purchases from them have been smooth transactions also.
