So I popped my timing belt. I bought a used head from a scrapper online. When it arrived I noticed some scratches on the machined surface. Should I be concerned with these? A fingernail just catches on one, and not on the other. I was going to try the glass plate sanding technique unless the consensus is I shouldn't worry about it.

Measure it and see if you can machine it and use a thicker gasket.
Franko6 is the head master here, look him up

Since these use a stamped metal gasket, not a composite graphite one, chances are it'll leak. Deck it and then use it. Or get another head.

Machining the head doesn’t change the head gasket, it’s the piston protrusion that determines the head gasket thickness.
If you machine the head and then use a thicker head gasket all’s you will do is lower the compression on the engine.

Also, I would r&r any head any time it's off the block.
Nothing beats a clean, tight and flat cylinder head.

Thanks all. I'm going to get it decked by a machine shop.

Too often I see a picture where someone set a head face down on concrete.
..and wonder what the hell they are thinking.
