05 Passat Trans acting up

Last week my car started jumping going up hills that it normally would pull without downshifting. Also sitting at traffic light it jumps. So I put it in neutral and wait for green and go.
I am leaning toward the torque converter not unlocking? Maybe a solenoid?
I'm at 235K and I do have another car to get trans out of but was wondering if anyone had any luck with a fluid and filter change?
Thanks for the input

There are just too many to list....
The modern slushbox diagnostics always work the same:

Check for any DTCs.

Check fluid level and condition.

Make certain it IS in fact the transmission (automatics get blamed for a lot of driveability problems that they are not responsible for).

If you have the time, Oilhammer, some examples? Thanks in advance.

Examples of what? Things people blame on the transmission?

Shoot, ANY low power concern, because the trans will remain in a lower gear if you have to floorboard it to get the car to move because the engine is sick.

Chaxles coming apart.

Bad mounts, clunking when selecting a gear.

Dragging/stuck brakes.

Bad wheel bearings.

I am sure CoolAirVW could list a bunch more.

Crappy tires.

that was me running after the car, but it was ready to go, the hood was up, the engine was missing and a big hole in the floor board

Thanks for the input guys. Finally got a chance to check codes.
17125 torque converter clutch
P0741-003 - stuck OFF/ No Power being transfered

And few that I don't think are an issue other than this one
19559 - Motorfor Intake Manifold Flap (V157)
P3103 - 000 Malfunction

Now here's the kicker, I cleared the codes and drove to work tonight and did not have to down shift and sitting at the light it does not jump like it did. The Engine light did come back on so I'll check codes again in the morning see what came back.
But to me the Torque Converter being stuck off does not make sense to make it do what it was doing.

OK, so you did step 1.... You need a torque converter.

Step 2 will help identify if there is some other looming issue that perhaps would make you not want to replace the converter and instead do the whole transmission.

ZF says flush these every 100k km.... but they rarely get that. If they do, they seem to hold up fine, about middle of the road for conventional automatic transmissions, which ALL fail eventually. Nature of the beast.

The converter is probably not staying locked up so the jumping out of gear is the essentially a bad converter.

Roll the dice and replace the converter, maybe the transmission will last.

Or balance shaft delete and swap 5 speed and have a relaible efficient car.

Or sell it as is for 250 to 300 bucks and cut your losses.

Vw zips was very helpful answering my questions when i did my conversion as were many other members in this site
