The Union Pacific 844 is still in operation, as are a few dozen in China and South Africa.

Local group actually organizes "steam vacations" around them. I went and saw the newly restored 844 running to Tennessee a couple years ago. Quite a sight, and that beast looked, sounded, and smelled awesome. Although a large chunk of its train was its own fuel and water (since they no longer have facilities for those).

Looks like next year may be the last Winterfest, before it becomes a Fallfest instead: https://jalopnik.com/the-detroit-aut...nth-1823457732

Mid to end of October would be best for the colors around the area. Earlier in October is better North...

Probably not much of an issue down by Detroit in early October but in areas popular with tourists during peak fall color hotel room prices may be higher. That would be the only potential negative with this change in dates I'd think.

For me October is more likely to conflict with other events/plans. Comes down to who announces what first and what I commit to first. I do see the logic in moving the show to October as January is a crap shoot for snow and cold factors.

October would be fine, although I find it somehow appealing to head to Detroit in January.

The more surprising part of that story is the Mercedes won't be at the 2019 show. With a number of significant brands already missing, I may have to make my way to LA this year.

If they move it, will they not have a show until October 2019?

It seems the Detroit show just isn't what it once was. LA would be neat to see. Heck, Chicago is probably better now.

It really feels like the Detroit show is in decline. Lots of missing brands this year and if Mercedes skips it next year, it's just another nail in the coffin.

We're considering taking the train up to New York City this year for the auto show.

I usually go to the NY show and it's less than the Detroit show. Fun to go, nevertheless.

It sounds like there'll be a January 2019 show, it's just the 2020 show that would be changed. (To October 2019? Or to October 2020?)

I agree. I usually go with my brother. NYC Auto Show usually has lots of concepts. And April’s nice too!

But Chicago would work too.
