In Central Ohio the price of gasoline and diesel are almost equal. I paid $2.79 ($2.39 with my grocery perks) for diesel on Monday, The local dino dealer is at $2.75 for regular this morning.

I drove past a station in Shakopee, Minnesota, yesterday when the diesel was $2.759 and RUG was $2.649. That's the closest spread I've seen in many months, 11 cents.

Diesel is up to $2.859 at that station and all the others in the area today. So a 21-cent spread today. Still, not too bad.

Sucking fumes in my Ram on Saturday after helping my daughter move. Pulled into the QT in lake Wylie. Sign read $2.69 for diesel. Pump said $2.60. Too bad I only have a 24 gallon tank!

Filled up at a Speedway station for $2.779 today. Regular unleaded was $2.699. That's the closest spread I've seen in a year or so.

Filling up as I type this. Cali fuel is going through the roof! Like 50 cents higher in the last 5 days or so.

People asked why I wanted a diesel, well I was playing the long game, diesel is now cheaper than regular. Least at this shell which usually diesel was higher at ;)

Wow. Welcome to summer fuel. Headed out there next week. Glad I rented a small car.

EDIT: Actually won't be far from you: attending a family wedding in Fallbrook.

Won’t be far at all. I don’t live in North County, but I’m near the next big town North of Fallbrook on the 15.

Vancouver Island (Canada):
$1.269/L (diesel)
$1.499/L (RUG)
$1.689/L (RUG in Metro Vancouver - didn't witness that one myself, but heard peeps on the radio talking about it)

In USD per US gallon, those equate to:
$3.61 (D)
$4.26 (RUG where I live)
$4.81 (Metro Vancouver)

...and people wonder why we still drive our Mk4s and TDIs in general. :D

Those prices are high, but Vancouver Island isn't exactly the most accessible for goods and services. I wonder how different prices are in the city of Vancouver.

Vancouver is lumped into an area knows as the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) and within that catchment there is an additional $0.17/L of tax - Ouch!

I would bet the transportation to stations cost is higher for Vancouver Island than for the mainland.

I wonder how that tax structure compares to the US one, save for US consumers paying less. I've hoped for a big increase in fuel taxes for a long time, as I feel it's the only way American consumers will change their consumption behavior. Or a carbon tax. But I don't think it's ever going to happen.

"Metro Vancouver" in my post is city of Vancouver (and area) price - they are ALWAYS way higher than we are on the Island.

Not to be the "well, actually..." guy, but GVRD re-branded as "Metro Vancouver" a number of years ago. :)

As for the pricing, out of the hypothetical "$1.47/L" of fuel in crash's graphic, we on the Island are subject to all but $0.144 of that.

And yet, our prices are almost always closer to $.20/L less. Makes no sense to me either, as there's a pipeline that goes right into Vancouver, while all of our fuel on the Island is barged or ferried over on trucks.

Since January 1st regular gasoline has risen from about $2.20-2.25 to about $2.69-2.79 -- about a nickel a week for the last four weeks.

Higher crude prices have pushed diesel up a bit, but AAA says the average price is 0.6 cents/gallon lower than one month ago. I can still find stations where D2 is $2.75-2.85.

So the spread has really narrowed, and if gasoline keeps going up there soon be stations where the diesel is cheaper than the regular. I'll post a photo when I see it; if it's going to happen then it will happen by May 10th. That is historically the day when it happens.

Too late.

I lived there for close to 15yrs and it was always the GVRD. Much like the Ontario feeling as if it's the centre of the Canadian Universe, nothing seems to exists East of Hope for people in the Lower Mainland and you just proved it :)

Filled up yesterday at Cumberland Farms off of US-192 and I-95. Because I get $.10/gal, the price was $2.719 for me. RUG was $2.579 I believe.

Speedway (formerly SuperAmerica) in Monticello, Minnesota, about halfway between the Twin Cities and Saint Cloud on I-94.

The Holiday station across the street had the same prices for unleaded and diesel, but not on a big sign like this one. Also, I had a Holiday 10-cent/gallon discount coupon so paid $2.679 for 13.7 gallons.

Typical prices right now are $2.79-$2.84 for unleaded and $2.89-$3.04 for diesel. Gas prices just keep rising and diesel has stayed much the same for a few months now. This is a very ordinary seasonal pattern.
