Auto Zeitung had a comparison review of 6MT 2WD crossovers, including the CX-5 Sky-D. (The others: BMW X1 18d, Audi Q3 TDI, Tiguan TDI, Kia Sportage diesel).

The Mazda has a significantly better Euro fuel economy rating than every other car in the compare, but on Auto Zeitung's test loop it actually returned the exact same fuel economy as the (much heavier) Tiguan and Q3. The BMW was a bit better, the Kia a lot worse.

In the end the Mazda was 4th place without and 3rd place with the value-for-money rating included. It however won the engine/drivetrain rating for being a bit quicker than the others and having the slickest MT. It also revs to 5000, is quiet and refined.

However, 20,000 km maintenance interval when all others are 30,000km?

I'd like to see the engine in something that's not a crossover.

I'd like to see the TDI Tiguan or Q3 over here.

I'm sure it's just a benevolent post trying to get all of us in a fine car courtesy of the professionals at K.M., not advertising.

Great, isn't it?

It looks like the sky-d uses some valve timing techniques and low CR for in-cylinder nox control. That looks vaguely similar to the caterpillar ACERT. The cat engines generally got disappointing mpg, and are no longer being sold in the truck market. The sky-d test loop numbers remind me of what was seen with cat.

No expert here in either engine, just know a few bits and pieces...

The Sky-D doesn't get disappointing fuel economy, it gets class-competitive fuel economy while being really enjoyable to drive. It's just that the fuel economy rating numbers in the standardized test cycle suggested the Mazda would be better than "class-competitive".

I'd like to test drive a Sky-D, but my local dealer only has a MT gasser and an AT diesel CX-5.

"18 model configurations to choose from"

We'll never see that many options in the US. I am really doubting that we will ever see the diesel engine anyway.

just got done reading a Polish article from a mag which pitted the Kuga, Tiguan, Hyundai ix35, Mazda CX-5 against each other. Mazda got high points for transmission precision, flexible drive train- aka great engine power at all speeds and very good MPG. Tiguan was criticized for sloppy transmission- it was a manual, and engine which was laggy, didn't respond as well and was over 2 seconds slower to "100" vs the lighter more powerful Mazda.

I kind of do hope they bring the diesel over after reading a few reviews...... might make me go back to the cars from the Rising sun.

Like I said earlier, Mazda has already proven their diesel capability in the US in the 80s' technology Ford Escorts and Rangers. Wouldn't I love to test drive a Mazda 6 6mt skyactivdiesel. I'm betting they won't offer it since I want one. If anything, it will only be offered in a dinky Mazda 3 here or a harsh riding SUV.

If Mazda offers a CX-5 with a diesel, all-wheel drive, and a manual trans in the US, I will almost certainly buy one. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Diesel and manual transmission CX-5 would be on the short list - I don't even need the all wheel drive.

Mazda Skyactiv-D Diesel Racing Engine Announced for Grand-Am GX Class

Read more: http://rumors.automobilemag.com/mazd...#ixzz1wgqR4yHm

Quote:
According to information released by Mazda, the engine will be based on a stock-block engine, and in testing, the block, head and common-rail injectors have proven robust enough for racing duty. The valves, pistons, connecting rods and oiling systems will be changed for racing duty, within class guidelines.

Estimated output of the engine was not announced, but the Grand-Am GX category has a 400-hp target output, although final rules and guidelines are to be determined. Mazda was also mum on what car will run the engine, and promised an announcement on specific vehicles will be coming later in 2012.
