Default another eurojet smic question

theres a really good offer on another forum for us to ship a load of the eurojet smic to the uk for a very cheap price for a group buy. but im concerned that id be dissapointed with a upgreded intercooler at this stage. i have good performance now and cant really notice that much it falling off when i drive it hard . i am going to put id parts upgraded piping in aswell which i have waiting in the wings . id just like to know if anyone would think at my stage of mods its a worthwhile mod and if i will benefit . ina country that is below 15 degress c for 70 % of the year

Do you have VCDS? You can monitor your IATs while driving, which will give you an idea of the efficiency of your present intercooler...I can honestly say that the EJ SMIC with upgraded piping and a vented fender liner made a HUGE difference on my car.

EDIT: just saw your sig with your mods. I'm pretty sure you need this ;-)

sounds good .can you describe how it made a difference just so im clear on what to expect . as i know you cant gain power from an intercooler only sustain what you have or maybe claw back if your temps are high from the off . i havent done any intake mods on my current setup but with stock turbo 18 psi pp520s the intercooler was never out of whats considered the normal range . obviously ive modded somewhta since then so things maybe a little different . i just dont want to spend more money on mods that wont really do much until i add a bigger turbo.id rather just buy the bigger turbo if thats the case. but with these intercoolers being so cheap as a group buy if it works it will be good money saved

Actually, if you use a 9" or 10" tall fmic, cut out all but the top flat piece of the crash bumper, it fits rather nicely with very little trimming of the bumper cover.

Matt that is too big and yields no advantage(bumper blocks most of it any way) I did that years ago and found that the smaller, lighter unit cooled as good and was much cheaper(back then before china flooded the market with this stuff). Mine was like a 6x2.5X26 I believe. Bumper was fitted as a duct for max air flow thought the cooler. 40% rule applies. Only about 40% of the air hitting the front of the cooler will flow through the cooler. Thats why race cars have small ducts and larger cooler down stream to force the air through the cooler. There are books on this subject. A FMIC is not that efficient either in this regard, but better than SMIC on our cars.

The side mounts are ok, but the Front mount would be a better option. Testing on our rally car was done and on a 90F day, the FMIC outlet temp was 110F. Inlet temps were all over 180-230+F depending on the turbo we used.

yeah ive seen the big fmic that have people have made fit behind the stock bumper . or whats left of it. i must admit looking at the size of core and piping i want the ebay kits will be cheaper and as good if not better. the only thing is i dont have the time with work and twin babies to cut and measure pipes all day . and i guess my local tuners will charge a fair bit for the work . making the smic still an option

I understand about the time. I spent about 2-3 hours one day measuring and cutting the pipes. Then spent an afternoon another day installing everything.

Not always true. Not all cores are created equal.

Also if you live in a snow climate with sand and gravel your FMIC will be destroyed.
