The folks who make seat covers have been making versions for those with the air bags at least since my 2003 Golf was new.

Each seat cover's front and sides are impact air bag compatible and have been tested at an airbag lab for compliance.

About a month ago, my local VW dealer (Albuquerque) called me and told me that he had ONE Golf TDI that had just arrived and that I'd better come in before it sold. I went in the next day - the car still hadn't been prepped to test drive - so went back the next day and they couldn't "find" it, but finally did - so drove it - loved it (I have a 2001 Jetta TDI) but it was the wrong color, had some features I didn't want - so I asked when if I could order one that I wanted - salesman told me that he had no idea when more would be in and also had no control over what VW would send him - acted like he didn't care if he made this $23K plus sale - so I gave him my name and told him to call me when more came in. I then contacted the dealership in Santa Fe - they also had just gotten one in and basically, in a more friendly way, told me the same thing as the ABQ dealer - "we never know when or what VW will send us". Ok - so we called two dealers in AZ and were basically told the same thing.
My question - is this all BS - why oh why is so frackin' hard to get a new Golf TDI??? I want one, have waited for one, blah blah blah.
Ideas? Feedback? Help?

It was sort of like this back when the Mk5 Rabbit first came out -- there weren't very many and dealers had a hard time keeping one in stock as a demo (even with the 2.5-liter gas engine). The argument was that VW was losing money on every one imported from Germany, and wanted people to buy Jettas and New Beetles instead. But eventually every dealership, or at least most of them, had adequate supplies with a reasonable variety of colors and options.
Note: if you want a Golf TDI with the 6-speed manual, these may be the hardest to find so grab one if you can.

It is not all BS, VW does send replenishment stock, but most dealers get order allocation slots based on their sales volume. I talked to the sales manager at the dealer I had been working with, I bought my first TDI from them. was in for service 3 times in 2 weeks, with problems and was talking about possibly getting a new car, the Sales Manager was all wishy-Washy, with the responses and tried the "Oh we take What VW gives us"
Went to the bigger dealership in the area, they were happy to take my order and $500 deposit.

Yes, the dealers are only getting one---possibly two Golf TDI. Eventually they'll get more. I wanted manual and didn't want to pay a market adjustment so I shopped around. I also got the feeling that they didn't care about my money but were damned sure they were going to get a market adjustment. One dealer had a $5000 adjustment. Puhlease. I ended up taking one off the lot (for sticker) in a color that I didn't want but I just love it. I figured that the only thing I had to have was the 6-speed manual. Everything else was negotiable.
Keep shopping and call/email any dealer within 50 miles if you're willing to drive. It's a fantastic car and worth the work to get one.

Every dealer within 50 miles? I would still be without a TDI. (there are no dealers within 75 miles of me)
Figure out how much you are willing to travel to buy, some have flown to a location to buy the car and drive it home.

interesting packaging
I stopped by my local dealer and saw this 2010 TDI Golf still in the wrapper. Sticker showed $26k and change, loaded up with DSG and other goodies.

I saw the new 2010 Jetta Sportwagon TDI at the Seattle auto show. It's got the Golfs front end. It also had a sticker of $27.6K.
My local dealer has a new Golf 4D GLS for $25.
I guess VW just priced me out of the TDI market.

Remember that the cost of ownership is not what a car costs when new. It is how much it loses in value due to depreciation.

totally agree. $26K for a Golf TDI that gets 42 mpg on the highway and the uncertainity of D2 prices in the US ? I might as well get a used Mini

The Golf TDI's start at $22,189, but it has more standard goodies, too. My 2000 Golf had a base price of $16,500 or so with less goodies. Consider a decade of inflation there. It's really not too bad.
Though the MINI looks cool on the outside, it's got a cheap interior. I'd MUCH prefer a Golf. And you'd be surprised how much a MINI costs when you add options.

My girlfriends Mini isn't bad, but I'd take a Golf over it any day.
